Catholics have no problem with divorce.
Getting remarried is the hang up.

Traditional teaching is that civil divorce, even without remarriage, is to be avoided.
My grandmother divorced my grandfather. She needed to show extraordinary circumstances to get permission from the Church to continue to receive the Sacraments.
This was a very long time ago, but today’s attitude of “so long as you don’t remarry” is a novelty from the first 19 centuries of ordinary Catholic practice.
