Yes. In my voting life ie 50 yrs, only Reagan and Trump had that connection. The rest were bureaucrats - or WORSE.
I think Truman and Coolidge may have had the connection—and if not, they had parents who did. I’m not sure if a case can be made for Hoover or Harding.
A few years ago, I did a $500k business deal with Trump. It was peanuts to Trump, but pretty important to our young company. Trump took the time to call me directly to work out the deal rather than relying on a subordinate. That's how one builds relationships.
True story. Friend of a girl who used to work in my office once stopped to help Trump’s limo driver change a tire on a crowded street. Poor man was flustered and probably afraid for his job. Her friend helped him change it and get them on the road again. Trump asked him what he wanted for payment, but the friend wasn’t doing it except as a good Sam. So he says, send us some flowers, just to be gracious, and he gives him his address. When he got home there was a huge floral arrangement at his front door, and a note saying, “we paid off your mortgage.” This was shortly after he climbed out of bankruptcy from his disastrous Taj Mahal thing.
