Lack of common sense among scientists in charge of public policy is part of the problem. Although we’re taught viral transmission is partially airborne and viruses can pass through most materials easily, they should have known the virus is bound in aggregates of exhaled secretions. Had they just said USE A BANDANA OR HANKERCHIEF in lieu of a mask, many people would have complied and 1) mask buying panic would decrease 2)some infections early on could have been prevented.
