Wisconsin justices weigh removal of 130K from voter rolls

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Supreme Court weighed Tuesday whether to go along with conservatives who argue that 130,000 voters should be removed from the rolls in the hotly contested presidential battleground state, while the Democratic attorney general defended not purging them.

The Wisconsin case is one of several lawsuits across the country, many in battleground states, that seek to purge voters from registration rolls. It is being closely watched because President Donald Trump won the swing state by fewer than 23,000 votes in 2016. However, the lawsuit was unlikely to be resolved by the state Supreme Court before the Nov. 3 election just five weeks away.

Justices on the court controlled 4-3 by conservatives gave little indication during the hour-long oral arguments how they were leaning.

The Wisconsin case hinges on whether voters who were identified as potentially having moved should be removed from the voter registration database. The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty, a conservative law firm, argued that the state elections commission broke the law when it did not remove voters from the rolls who did not respond within 30 days to a mailing last year indicating they had been identified as someone who potentially moved.

The commission wanted to wait until after the presidential election before removing anyone because of inaccuracies found while previously attempting to identify voters who may have moved.

Because voters who moved were concentrated in more Democratic areas of the state, liberals argued that the lawsuit was meant to lower turnout on their side. Republicans countered that it was about reducing the likelihood of voter fraud and making sure that people who moved are not able to vote from their previous addresses.

A circuit court judge ruled last year that the voters must be removed immediately, but...

The Wisconsin Supreme Court now has a one-vote Liberal majority thanks to the STOOOOOOOPID voters of that state.

Don’t hold your breath.

(*full disclosure: I am in PA where our state Supreme Court is even WORSE thanks to voters sleeping thru an off-year election)

They also elected that moron as Governor.

Or is every election in Wisconsin stolen?

Hooray,Pennsylvania is equally screwed royally. We are not going to know the results the day after. Most likely the DNC will have the amount of votes to win after the election. I never thought America could go through something worse than chad-gate and the court circus of 2000.

Badgers never understood how important it was to reelect Governor Walker in 2018.

With a Democrat majority on this court, there is no way to protect election integrity. People could have corrected things like this decades ago but wouldn’t do so.

I never thought America could go through something worse than chad-gate and the court circus of 2000.

The Dems started planning for this the day after W was declared the winner. They lay awake at night, all night, thinking up new ways to game the system. Our side had better catch on.

Ultimately this will have to be decided by SCOTUS.

Probably with Amy Comey Barrett casting the 5th. vote in Trump’s favor.

Absolutely, the rats stole did that SC seat. I remember when the rats tried recall the Chief Justice. They tried the usual trick of finding a bunch of votes at the end but it turned out the SOS held back the numbers for one of the conservative precincts and the SC Justice prevailed. The rats screamed and whined but there was nothing they could do.

There is a simple process fix for this - purge ALL voters 30 days after Inauguration day. All voters get sent a notice that they will need to re-register.

This removes most of the dead and movers.

there was some question about the governor election as well

chicago dems always help out busing people up to vote in southeast wi and madistan

they always have dane county votes tally at the end because then they know how much they have to add to win

oh we found more

Fight, appeal and delay.
Now the argument will be it’s too close to the election so someone MAY be disenfranchised.
Forget about peoples votes being negated by illegal voters.

yes they can still give voters a chance to participate even if knocked off the rolls. Heck they can vote provisionally and get their vote cured if they can be proven to be residents.
Surely the judges can come up with a deal on this.

I have thought about this as a good way to solve the problem. Since voting is a civic duty, but not a requirement, it is consistent with respecting the privacy of persons to be opt-in.

So you register to vote, but if you miss one election day, you are removed from the rolls and have to re-register. If you don’t want to vote, you can still show up and undervote, but you need to have made an effort to have your name checked off in the poll book if you want to keep your registration current.

If you have to register your car or pay local taxes once per year, it should be no problem to show up. Lots of people are used to doing things on an annual basis, like filing taxes or choosing insurance during open enrollment.

So just have states set a voter registration open enrollment period perhaps starting from President’s Day and ending on Labor Day, with a few special exceptions for people who move, buy/sell their residence, etc.
