Presuming anyone was awake to see them. Wasn’t she anchored for the night?
Aha, so it was the Jews! Iceberg, Goldberg, Greenberg....what's the difference?
It couldn’t anchor because the water was two miles deep.
There was no fog at all that night. It was a moonless clear night with no chop on the water. If there was chop on the water the lookouts could have seen it breaking at the bergs waterline earlier and alerted the bridge.
my reading over the years gives the distinct impression that Ismay was the one that wanted a record. tough having the boss right there.
also, fleet initially said in the lifeboat that he called and called and they didn’t answer, and hitchens asked who the OOW was (implying he never saw him) - this is interesting in light of the claim made in his grandaughter(or ggrandaughters) book that murdoch was passed out and therefore didn’t answer the call from fleet.
Ok, she was stopped.
you have seen the drawing on a napkin fleet made a long time later? combined with his intial comments in the lifeboat that he called and called and they didn’t answer, it suggests they had enough time if they had answered promptly.
Catastrophes like this happen because several things come together at once. If only one or sequential, the odds improve.
That is what the libs are trying to do now, overwhelm the system with several things at once.
We need to pray for our Captain Trump.
the book about hitchens is interesting.
obviously barring something very unexpected surfacing, all we have is speculation at this point. I don’t think anything will surface beyond what already has.
but just assume murdoch was negligent and passed out and thus the call from fleet wasn’t answered promptly - (officers had been reportedly partying earlier in the evening) - and he realizes he caused the ship to sink by his actions. what might he do once released from duty? it puts the persistent reports that he shot himself in a different light, as far as motive.
When you listen to “Titanic Text Messages - A Streaming Log of Distress Messages” you will see that it took a long time for other ships to acknowledge that Titanic was sinking despite her frantic calls of “require immediate assistance struck by iceberg at 41.40N 50.14W”.
Titanic ping.
The ship to shore communications used "ditty bop" signals on HF radio. If you knew anything about that you would know that the Ionosphere changes at night and makes the already sketchy radio communications a crap shoot. They ran into an iceberg and back then there was no radar or any device that could prevent that happening.
.
I think the best meditation on this event was by Thomas Hardy, in his poem “The Convergence of the Twain”. And I still believe that was the day the nineteenth century ended.

TWA 800 did not hit an Iceberg.;)
somebody looking for their 15mins
Thanks for fixing that point for me. It was a key that I was not correct on.
“6. It was a combination of conditions and human errors which caused the collision, not mysterious lights in the sky.”
Same point.
Passengers and crew.
