I always liked Boston, pretty nice since they took down the Expressway, pretty safe overall.

I won’t go near the place with all this crap going on.

But you are right, there are some beautiful rural areas up here.

I have lived up here since my Dad got out of the Navy, except for four years when I was in the USN myself. We moved here in the Summer of 1973, and I joined the Navy in 1975; getting out in 1979. When I met my wife in 1986, she took me down to Cape Cod, first time I had ever gone there.

I could have gone before that, but...I didn’t want to. All I ever heard about Cape Cod was that it was jammed with people, a giant tourist trap, so...I never went there.

When my girlfriend took me there in Spring of 1987, we drove out to the Cape Cod National Seashore and when we went out on the beach I was astonished at how empty it was. I walked alone away from the beach access that had a few people around, and saw nothing but deserted ocean beach for about an hour and didn’t see another person. No houses. No sign of man. Nothing.

I didn’t know there was anyplace like that in the Northeast. It was a bit of a shock to me.

I love this part of the country but damn, do I despise with a white hot burning passion, the scummy politics here.

When I characterize it to people, it is a small city with a big town attitude. It is a gritty blue collar city. It will always remind me of the Seventies, the way so many cities were back then.

I spent a few years working in Worcester during the 1990s. Commuted from Chelmsford - about an hour ride. Lot of pubs there. Especially Irish pubs. You could still get draft beers for a dollar during Happy Hour and there were stacks of Keno tickets all over the place with monitors showing the numbers. People would drink beer and play Keno for hours. It’s a drinking and gambling town.

I did not care to even find some place to eat there.

Just do my work and get out of the area.

Funny, I was born there. Hannamen hospital. We left Worcester when I was 5, occasionally we would drive back because my mother wanted to take a shopping trip to Spags.

When depression needs a break from misery but doesn’t want to feel too lonesome it visits Worcester.

There are very unsafe places in Worcester, especially at night.

Funny, I used to go to a lot of Boston Bruins games at the original Boston Garden (which I did love, it was so nasty, it had its own character) and afterwards, we might walk over to the North End to get some Italian food.

The walk from Boston Garden to the North End takes you through relatively deserted areas with ominous looking towering dark warehouses lit only by occasional street lamps. It looks bad and scary, but...it wasn’t because you were safe there.

The denizens of the North End didn’t want people being mugged coming over to eat at their restaurants, so you could walk with relative impunity.

Back in the Seventies, my family had an exhange student from Finland at the house, and she came back to visit us a few years ago, and brought her ten year old son with her.

They were big into hockey, and a guy from their country (Rask) was playing, so I got three tickets and took them to the game. After, I thought I would take them over to the North End for coffee and dessert, pastries at “Mikes Pastry”, that kind of thing.

Hahaha...they were terrified, and I could see they couldn’t go through that area. Those empty, dark warehouses and the street lights looked to them, I am sure, like every single American murder movie they had ever seen!

I couldn’t really blame them, if you didn’t know the area, you would probably be crazy to go through there.

Don’t know what it is like now, though. I doubt I would risk it.

I used to be in the USN, and Worcester kind of reminded me of Naples.

Without the “charm” and the Peroni beer, of course...:)

During my time there, you did not want to be out in some areas when school let out.

The junior high kids knew they were untouchable...you were not allowed to defend yourself from them and cops & troopers could not arrest them.

We went to Boston last year and did that walk. No problems at all. Easily over 100 people in line to get pastries at 10:00 pm on a Saturday night. This of course was prior to all the social unrest.
