Chicago's Dreadhead Cowboy rides horse on Dan Ryan Expressway; charged animal cruelty, reckless conduct, trespassing, ISP says

Hollingsworth, also known as the Census Cowboy, says on Facebook ride was #KidsLivesMatter protest

Chicago's so-called Dreadhead Cowboy Adam Hollingsworth is in police custody after police said he rode his horse on the Dan Ryan Expressway during the evening rush.

Hollingsworth is facing several charges including reckless conduct, disobeying a police officer and trespassing on the expressway, obstruction of traffic by a person, pedestrian on a controlled access highway and operating a non-highway vehicle on a highway. The Cook County State's Attorney's office approved one additional felony count of aggravated animal cruelty Tuesday evening.

Hollingsworth will appear in bond court Wednesday.

His sister said he remains in jail Tuesday, and the family is still waiting for details from authorities.

"He wasn't disturbing the peace. He wasn't hurting nobody," Lateshia Hollingsworth said. "It's very frustrating to even walk into a Chicago police station and they just have this nasty attitude and you're just trying to find information on your brother."

The calls starting coming in just before 4:30 p.m. Monday. Hollingsworth was going live on social media with a message.

"Kids lives matter. Until kids lives matter, until we understand kids lives matter nothing else matter," he said on a Facebook Live.

Agreed. If he’d said it was BLM, he wouldn’t have been arrested.

I don’t know a lot about this man (following FR tradition, I am posting without reading the whole article), but I like his style.

The first photo, with him riding straight and tall, and maskless, with all the poor intimidated locals wearing masks down below, almost looks like a ‘70s style blaxploitation film doing a take on the Wild West.

Hard to get too mad at him when roving gangs of thugs breaking things are tolerated.

And he’s right. Kids lives do matter.

He’s the census cowboy. He just thought the Mayor put up the Bat signal in the sky.

I do too, though I'd never heard of him till this incident. Apparently he has some reputation. Reminds me a little of Sheriff David Clarke though I suspect that's a bad comparison. Wish he'd run for something.

10 things you need to know about the Dreadhead Cowboy, who shut down the Dan Ryan on Monday

Who is the Dreadhead Cowboy?

A former boxer and exotic dancer, Hollingsworth, 33, grew up in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago and now lives in Englewood. In 2016 he faced a felony charge of gun possession, for which he served time. The gun wasn’t his, he told the Tribune, but police blamed him. He struggled during that period, in part because of an injury caused by a stray bullet that hit him while he was driving to a barbecue in Chicago. But he said he found his footing again after his uncle Eddie Thomas introduced him to horses.

How did he become famous?

Hollingsworth became a media darling when he started riding in Black Lives Matter protests, appearing in Minneapolis, Chicago, Berwyn and Cicero. Everyday Chicagoans responded strongly. “He’s our Batman,” tweeted one fan. He appeared in The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune and the Sun-Times. He earned goodwill when he ventured into the Latino Little Village neighborhood June 2, after unconfirmed social media posts indicated that alleged Latino gang members were racially profiling and threatening Black people due to fears of looting. In a Facebook video of the visit, Hollingsworth, who is Black, reported he was met with support and kindness.

What does he want?

Hollingsworth, the father of four children, has proposed building a stable for kids’ horseback riding lessons in a low-income, predominantly Black neighborhood on the South Side. He says horseback riding changed his life, and he wants children of color to have access to the sport. He wants an end to racism and police brutality, and he wants safety and better opportunities for Black and brown children.

I hope that isn’t a BLM Tee Shirt he’s covering up.

The women who owned the stable where this “Cowboy” boarded his horses, posted a letter on line yesterday.

The Cowboy is a complete POS - he left his horses locked up for days without food or water. Some of the horses are skin and bones. The stable owner called Animal Control several times, but they let the Cowboy go with a warning.

When she kicked him out, he stole two saddles from her barn, sacks of feed and didn’t pay any of his bills. But Mayor Lighthead hired him to do Community Service in Chicago.

I was going to ask about his animal husbandry skills, and that is just about what I expected.

Is it just me, or are the motorcycle riders also helping to block traffic for him?

I have had horses for over 35 years.

That horse is in good flesh. It is NOT lame. It is quiet & not bothered by the tarffic. It is on a ‘loose rein’.

THAT was NOT animal abuse.

ANY large animal vet can testify for this rider.
