What If Joe Biden Shows Up?
Townhall.com ^ | September 22, 2020 | Derek Hunter

It’s fun to do, and hard not to, but the game of mocking Joe Biden’s mental decline brings with it a pretty significant risk that many conservatives, and maybe even the Trump campaign, aren’t prepared for – what if Joe Biden shows up in the debates and pulls them off?

I’m not suggesting Biden will win the debates, at least not in any real sense – the few times he’s bothered to take questions, including the CNN town hall Thursday that couldn’t have been friendlier if the questioners were limited to his own campaign staff, he mostly tossed meaningless word salads that anyone paying attention should feel sorry for him over. But all the “Joe Biden won’t even show up” and “Joe Biden is so far gone, Trump is going to eat his lunch” pre-debate spin inadvertently lowered the bar for his performance that all he has to do is not literally soil himself in the middle of it for the left to declare him the victor.

Remember the 2000 election? What was the liberal narrative about George W. Bush in the lead up to the debates? That he was an idiot, a lightweight who had to pick Dick Cheney as his running mate in order to give the ticket “gravitas.”

No one had any expectations for Bush’s performance in the debates. Al Gore had been vice president for eight years and was a bit of an egghead who’d “invented the Internet.” The question going in was how big of an idiot would Bush come off as?

Bush didn’t come off as an idiot. Whether you thought he’d won or not depended on what you thought going in, but to the undecided public expecting to watch a buffoon fall on his face, they saw a governor handle himself quite well, especially compared to what they’d been conditioned to expect. Gore, for all his experience, came off as an arrogant ass who’d invaded the personal space of Bush, eliciting a “WTF nod” from the Texas governor, which ended up being what people remembered from all of it.

Bush won by simply not wetting himself, the substance didn’t matter. If you read the transcripts of the debates you may wonder how anyone could be considered as having “won,” but that Bush didn’t come off as a moron gave him the victory – he exceeded expectations, and that’s all it usually takes.

Presidential debates aren’t decided on points, trophies aren’t awarded at the end. Victories come about through zingers and memorable lines, and by beating expectations. President Trump is absolutely the better candidate for the former – there may be no more talented president when it comes to off-the-cuff remarks dripping with humor that stick.

On the expectations front, the president is at a distinct disadvantage, as any incumbent always is. They’re the president, they should be well-versed in everything because they’re on the job already.

For Biden, he may be entering the debates next weekend with the lowest expectations ever. We’ve all seen the clips of him lost, stopping in mid-sentence as his train of thought derails, or simply stringing together a group of words that have no connection to each other or reality. Those clips have gone so viral that it’s tempting to think that’s all he is. It’s not.

I watched that town hall Thursday. Aside from all the lying, which the media ignored, he handled himself fine. He wasn’t great, he had his “senior moments,” but was largely passable. And that’s all the has to be. Not to convince you or me, but to convince a group of voters who don’t watch Fox News or live on social media. And there are a lot of those.

By repeating the idea that Joe Biden will fall on his face in any debate, anything short of him doing just that will be exceeding expectations and could deliver him an undeserved victory. Never give ammunition to your opponent, and many on the right have done just that.

Biden, for all his obvious mental decline, has been playing the game of politics for 50 years. He’s never been sharp, but he’s always been good at the mechanics of projecting that he knows what he’s doing – he knows when to flash his unnaturally white smile and for how long. He’s debated a lot, so much of what he’s learned over his career is a reflex more than anything else.

Republicans shouldn’t be lowering expectations for his debate performance, they should be raising them. While there’s a chance he’ll make a fool of himself, there’s more of a chance he won’t. It’s fun to talk about how far he’s declined, but that just makes the bar he has to clear that much lower and the odds that he will that much higher.

Look, I think Joe Biden’s policies would be disastrous for the country, and I definitely believe he’s not up to the job. But I know he can hold it together well enough for a 90-minute TV debate and fool a lot of people, especially if they’re expecting him to start screaming like an old man complaining about the soup that comes with the blue-plate special. To pretend otherwise is crazy.

Like President Trump says, they both take a drug test. If Biden shows up, he’s probably on something to make him more lucid.

Listen, if Sloe Joe shows up and doesn’t shit down his leg the MSM will trumpet it as a huge victory over Trump.

The bar is really low for him.

Keeping the expectations bar almost at ground level for Biden is indeed something that could come back to bite some behinds, especially with the media ready, willing and able to render as much help as needed.

These articles are just stuff people write since they are running out of stuff to say.

President Trump debated against 17 serious republican politicians and then the “smartest” woman in the world-Hilbag.

Biden can’t be lucid nor dry enough to go toe to toe. Doesn’t matter what the media says, the people watching it live will know.

Seems to me that Rat Party Headquarters will conclude that no debates would cause less damage than debates would.A health excuse might be tricky...causing voters to think “geeze,he's almost 80 and he's on his sickbed”.

Rats must have something up their collective sleeves. No one in there right mind would let Biden debate the Prez.

Be careful. The bar is set very, very low for Biden. As long as he doesn’t lose his train of thought, dribble, or stare vacantly into space, the MSM will applaud.

Never mind his usual rhetorical balderdash when he gets stuck or doesn’t have a clue, “wait a minute, wait a minute, ya see....just a minute ok?...It’s like this...I mean, what about it...Hahahaha....ok, so let’s get real, like I told you, ok. It’s a real thing and we gotta, you know what I mean? You gotta see it...”

I largely agree with this analysis. I don’t think Joe can make it. Problem will be if he does. Biden didn’t do well against Palin telling a BS story about eating at a restaurant “the other day” that had been closed for a decade. The media will cover for Biden. Biden “corrected” Palin was right Biden was wrong. Biden hasn’t gotten any better, Trump will have to rattle Joe with out appearing to be a bully.

“Trump will have to rattle Joe with out appearing to be a bully.”

Ukraine. A nice inset about our relations with the eastern European countries would do.

This is what I have been posting for weeks. As long as Trump is properly prepared by his handlers he will be fine. But, he has to prep and be ready.

Nah, Trump should bully if he can. This is the most important debate for the most powerful position. If the discussion after the debate is that Trump bullied Biden and wouldn’t let Biden think that would be a win in my book.

Biden will get a shot in the ass to get him to stay focused for a couple of hours.

One week to go. I still don't believe Biden will debate President Trump. I believe it would be a disaster the likes of which has never been seen before in the US political landscape. No amount of prep work, no amount of rest, no amount of drugs, no amount of Biden-friendly moderator, no amount of Biden-friendly cuts and on-the-fly editing by a complicit media could mitigate even a fraction of the disaster.

Can you imagine Joe mumbling and stumbling through over an hour of off-the-cuff responses without benefit of a teleprompter? Even trying to feed him talking points through a concealed earpiece will likely only confuse him. He will lose his train of thought, go off on a tangent. He will likely get angry and lash out - probably not at the moderator who will be nothing but friendly, helpful, even cordial towards Biden. President Trump will push his buttons and Joe will lash out.

I just don't see it happening. I believe one of two things will prevent it. Some "crisis" will crop up and Joe's campaign will "feel compelled to regrettably cancel the event he was so looking forward to..." or he'll show up but there will be some reason, some switch made at the last moment and someone else will "heroically" step in.

The first scenario is more frightening. The leftists are not above causing a crisis, even sacrificing dozens, hundreds of lives to further their agenda and gain power. They may take an "active hand" in any major distraction.

The second scenario would see Joe have to back out. I initially thought maybe something dramatic on camera, have him nearly collapse then a surrogate step out on camera, comfort him, and heroically step up to battle the evil President Trump. However I'm thinking they may want to avoid the negative optics of a weak Biden. So it may happen immediately prior to the debate start (minutes or even seconds). I had thought it would be Hillary stepping in to save the party. Now I'm thinking it would be Harris. Heroically backing up her President (candidate) and stepping up "why even our VP can stand toe to toe with their Pres..." or some such BS. The outside player would be Michelle, but I'm thinking they'll want to keep it "in house" and use Harris since she's on the ticket.

I guess I'll know in a week. This might actually be a debate I watch. Usually they are so obviously biased that they are too maddening to watch. However, this one should have entertainment value either from the theatrics of the old switcharoo at the start, or the absolute pleasure, comedy, and tragedy of watching Biden melt down and his campaign utterly auger-in leaving nothing but a smoking hole in the ground.

The issue is that the Biden dementia is only talked about in the 20% of Americans that are rabid about politics.

When the other 80% show up to see the debates, they’re going to see the Joe the media’s been trying to hide.

Agreed. “Bullying” will not turn off Trumpsters. If there are any boneheads that are “on the fence”, if they aren’t off of it, they’ll never get off.

Biden is a bully himself. An elitist who deserves everything he gets. Besides, Trumps actions are steered by God. And God won’t allow Trump to screw up.
