The rare metals are found in Africa, and China is trying to control this resource. Think cell phone and car batteries.

The Chinese are bringing in their own workers to do this, but unlike western do gooders, whose aim is not to disturb their culture but to keep them living their green lifestyle, aka in poverty, the Chinese are promoting a modern lifestyle... cellphones used to buy and sell, and used as banks, and now for classes in schools. The corrupt government might not keep the electricity on, but China will sell you a generator.

And unlike American kids, African kids study hard, for they see education as a way out of poverty.

The press shows a very biased picture of Africa and Asia. There are war zones, but such areas are not universal.

The corruption means the smartest and most ambitious folk leave for jobs overseas.

As for the slums...this is a world wide problem, as village folk move into cities. We white “ethnics” were in similar slums until recently, and I won't even go into the elite's hatred, of Hillbillies.

I fully agree Lady Doc - on my other post I was simply being sarcastic. Not only am I one of those former African children that studied hard, but if you click the link I put there you’ll see the dilapidated African mud hut villages in all their glory ... :)

Not to say there’s no suffering and sadness in Africa - unfortunately, there are quite a number of places where things could be much better. But I find it hilarious when some people think the whole bloody place is a mess. Anyway, let them continue thinking that way. Nothing but ‘beetle dung’ in Africa I tell ya! Nothing.
