From personal experience with my oldest, trust me, the military is being much more selective in their recruiting process.
When I joined it was: Diploma, ASVAB, clean piss test, and sign the line. Just that easy.
Way more background and information needed these days.

That’s right, and if this PC crap doesn’t end real soon, at some point America will be on the losing end of World War III.
Joined the Army in 1969 directly out of high school, going to be my own man and tired of people telling me what to do. That all changed the moment the door to the bus opened and in came screaming Werewolves from Hell. Say hello to Tiger Land.
A couple of months ago the Indians sent a Chinese unit home licking their wounds (the ones that were still alive) after a hand-to-hand engagement in a mountain pass somewhere on their border.
Tea and Crumpets anyone ? Or do You prefer Scones ?
Nothing about eskimo parts, girl form Wichita Falls, etc.
Maybe Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond tunes?
Me too in 1969, I thought I was a bad ass teenager but WWII vet Dad convinced me to join.
Best thing that ever happened to me, I found out how I lacked discipline and it didn't take long for the DI's to remind me of it.
Made this boy into a man and throughout my short Army career I will always thank those BCT DI's for getting my sh*t straight.
“It got your attention quickly and stopped any misbehavior immediately.”
I believe the part about capturing your attention but my reaction would be to flip the bird and depart the immediate premises. Realize I would be arrested or something at some point.
From what I recall reading, there was a familiarity between the two groups for a time near that border then the Chinese soldiers were replaced by unfamiliar hostile little nip bastards and it went to hell. The beloved Indian commander was killed and it wasnt pretty for the Indians according to some accounts. Anyway it was interesting reading the comments of the story as unsurprisingly the Indians have near homicidal disdain and contempt for their politicians.
(oppositional defiance syndrome). Even now.
Yeah, cadences are pretty tame today.
