Study Corrected: Transgender Hormones and Surgeries Offer No Mental Health Benefits

The American Journal of Psychiatry (AJP) has released a correction to a 2019 Swedish study which drew as its primary conclusion that individuals who claim to be transgender experience mental health benefits following gender-affirming surgeries.

After reanalysis, the Swedish study’s conclusion was that neither “gender-affirming hormone treatment” nor “gender-affirming surgery” decreased the need for mental health services of those claiming to be transgender.

Overlooked were key data of completed suicides, healthcare visits, prescriptions, and hospitalizations for the litany of other medical or psychological diagnoses potentially related to gender-affirming treatments. These omissions suggested cherry-picking data in order to obtain the desired results.

The physicians observed findings from another Swedish study from 2011 – one they described as “perhaps the best of its kind.” When followed out past ten years, that study draws the conclusion that the group of participants with “reassigned” sex had 19 times the rate of completed suicides and almost three times the rate of death and in-patient psychiatric care due to any cause, when compared with the general population.

The former psychiatrist in chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital ended sex reassignment surgeries at Johns Hopkins Medical School in the wake of a study that found patients undergoing the surgeries showed no improvement in their mental or social health.

The authors observed faulty studies are often cited by transgender industry advocates as evidence why parents should allow children and adolescents to take puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones, and even have transgender surgeries such as double mastectomies:

These unethical surgeries are receiving funding by the very NIH [National Institutes of Health] that claims to be working to correct problems of irreproducibility. These experiments are beyond reproducibility problems: they are ethical failures by which doctors cause long-term harm to children and adolescents, all based on political activism supported by faulty science.

Anyone want to mutilate their genitals is mentally off balance. So with this study giving some nut trying to change its sex transgender hormones will not change the fact they are nuts

Most of the times the correction to a study is to say that the study is invalid because the author left off conditions or only "proved" to 90% confidence rather than the usual 95%. But to prove the opposite is amazing.

This story made me think of Jewel Shuping, who (according to a NY Post article) "suffers from an illness called body integrity identity disorder (BIID) — a disease that causes able-bodied people to strongly desire a disability." She believed that she should be blind so she was able to find a psychologist who dripped chemicals in he eyes to blind her. That doctor should lose his medical license for gross misconduct.

David Reimer was a Canadian guy who,after a surgical mishap,was raised as a girl on the advice of at least one world famous "expert" (Dr John Money).

Long story short after a life of horror he decided to blow his brains out in his 30s.

In some/many cases it is the idea of being “special” and part of a special group. With all of the special attention given to minorities in the last 10 to 20 years, I wonder if on a subconscious level the well-off white girls don't want to be forgotten, so they become their own minority by “becoming” a trans boy?

Worse than a monster and should be treated as the freak that they are.

Even worse are the doctors that would mutilate healthy tissue and inject hormones in otherwise physically healthy people. Medical personnel should be stewards of health, especially when people are vulnerable (mentally or physically). To me they are far ‘worse’ and far more sick than the actual suffering patients.
