And, if I recall correctly, was disowned and ostracized by the Lee family for his “sins”.
I posted my thing and then looked at the thread to see where you referred to the “malice toward none” so well done.
I even get indignant with myself sometimes.
South Carolina secedes in February 1861. Lays siege to Ft. Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Lincoln attempts to send supplies to the fort, Confederate shore battaries open fire. The result four years later , the South is defeated, Davis and Lee are hung as traitors. Hundreds of thousands of former Confederate soldiers are demobilized and return home.
I don’t want to divide anyone and talk about hypocrisy. I’m merely pointing out historical and personal fact. Democrats are fanning the flames today. They started the fire in 1861.
The delusions you Rebs tell yourself.
Your history left out the Attack on Ft. Sumter and the whole secession thing?
Correction; Davis and Lee AREN’T hung for treason. They walked.
Virginia did not attack Fort Sumpter. South Carolina did. No one was killed. So Virginia deserves invasion and was?
Well thanks for the free parking in your head pal.And jeez, you’re either pretty ignorant of history or just plain stupid.
Your side were the Democrats who created the Confederacy, the Klan and Jim Crow, not mine. I’m a conservative.
I did not leave out the “whole secession thing.”
Virginia did not attack Fort Sumter.
What you are is an anti south bigot and have been since you arrive here in all your fake photos on your homepage
The fact you think that since 1859 that conservatism is defined simply by Republican versus Democrat belies your stupidity
The fact you equate my ancestry and Robert E Lee and TJ Jackson and Bedford Forrest as Nazis indicates to me I wouldnt piss down your neck were it on fire
You have clearly.....and always have despite our warnings...allied yourself with the statue toppling Left
So go enjoy
“I dont want to divide anyone...”
You’re not telling the truth.
Are you 165 years old and still pissed about something?
Strictly speaking it was the Confederacy that attacked.
No one was killed. So Virginia deserves invasion and was?
Virginia joined the Confederacy when they were engaged in a war. That made it Virginia's war as well.
Thanks... the idea of leniency & pardons for Confederates started with Lincoln and continued with President Andrew Johnson, who did eventually pardon virtually every confederate.
Now central_va disagrees with my theory that it was, in effect, a "deal" with Confederates -- that they stop fighting and accept abolition in exchange for blanket pardons, citizenship and voting rights.
And I can't prove there ever was a conscious "deal" made, but that was what actually happened.
BDParrish: "Lincoln sent a letter to all the states mobilizing troops to attack one of the states.
You cannot commit "treason" by defending your state when your own governor calls you to arms to do it....
A high school definition of treason does not apply."
Remember this: there were no high schools in 1787 when the Constitution was written, but the Founders who wrote it, especially James Madison & Alexander Hamilton, have been considered brilliant geniuses of government ever since.
Their definition of treason was intended for rebellions, insurrections, "domestic violence" and invasions by foreign armies.
Now many here have argued that did not apply to the Civil War, but their logic is greatly tortured and requires stretching definitions of words well beyond their normal limits.
I don't buy it.
But I do accept that Lincoln and others -- notably SCOTUS Chief Justice Salmon Chase -- were determined that Confederates not be prosecuted for the war and should be returned to normal citizenship as soon as reasonably possible.
BDParrish: "After the war, when it was popular to refer to Pickett's charge as "the high water mark of the Confederacy", it was not uncommon for certain Southrons to point to that invasion as the grave iniquity which removed God's blessing from the glorious cause."
Such people typically forget that Lee's invasion of Pennsylvania in 1863 was just one of many Confederate military operations in Union states beginning in 1861.
Indeed, for the first 12 months of war there were more battles fought in Union states or territories than Confederate, and more Confederate soldiers died in the Union than the Confederacy.
Of course, by war's end most battles were fought in Confederate states, but even as late as the fall of 1864 there were still Confederate forces fighting in Union states like Kansas & Missouri.
So, if "God's blessing" depended on Confederate armies staying in their own states, then they first lost that blessing in the summer of 1861.
BDParrish: "There was no "eventual pardon" of Confederates as there were no charges or convictions.
There is no point to your point. "
Possibly in your own high school history class they didn't teach it, but in fact President Andrew Johnson did issue a series of blanket pardons, beginning with common Confederate soldiers and eventually working his way up to their highest leadership.
And that is a big part of my point here.
BDParrish: "But by the same token, I think you Brother Joe would understand that we here on FR will be friends in the future conflict."
Right, but the question is: are we to be Republicans or Democrats?
Lost Causers are old-time Southern Democrats who now vote Republican, but hate, hate the whole idea of Republican Unionism.
They want us to buy into their own Democrat anti-Union, anti-Republican lies, and we're just not going to do it, period, ever.
