The meeting was slated as a Minneapolis City Council study session on police reform.
But for much of the two-hour meeting, council members told police Chief Medaria Arradondo that their constituents are seeing and hearing street racing which sometimes results in crashes, brazen daylight carjackings, robberies, assaults and shootings. And they asked Arradondo what the department is doing about it.
"Residents are asking, Where are the police? said Jamal Osman, newly elected council member of Ward 6. He said he's already been inundated with complaints from residents that calls for police arent being answered.
That is the only public safety option they have at the moment. MPD. They rely on MPD. And they are saying they are nowhere to be seen, Osman said.

The number of reported violent crimes, like assaults, robberies and homicides are up compared to 2019, according to MPD crime data. More people have been killed in the city in the first nine months of 2020 than were slain in all of last year. Property crimes, like burglaries and auto thefts, are also up. Incidents of arson have increased 55 percent over the total at this point in 2019.
...
Council President Lisa Bender, who was among those leading the call to overhaul the department, suggested that officers were being defiant. Her constituents say officers on the street have admitted that theyre purposely not arresting people who are committing crimes.
This is not new, Bender said. But it is very concerning in the current context.

This is what police reform looks like.
Oh, and have a nice day!
LOL. Straight from the “You can’t make this crap up” category that Dave Barry started.
“With violent crime on the rise in Mpls., City Council asks: Where are the police?”
We don’t need no steenkin’ police...oh wait
What the Council has done to the police is like sending them up to home plate without a bat, then chewing their a$$ for not getting a hit. Evil and stupid at the same time.
Yeah Jamal. At first you chowder heads call form defunding the police. Now you ask, “where are they”? Confusing to say the least. Can’t have it both ways ass-weep-eh.
Norwegian immigrant Jamal Osman.
Jamal, you silly man. You just fired them. Next time, before you mouth off, use that gray matter between your ears. Just sayin.
Lisa Bender didn’t call for “overhauling the police” she called for the elimination of the police altogether. But, as she did so, she got the city to pay thousands of dollars in taxpayer funds for private security at her home.
Why should a police officer take his/her life in their hands and go out to do their jobs, now?
Even if they are not shot or killed, they can face years of legal wrangling and certain lifelong defamation, no matter what the result of just doing their job.
Week 1: “Defund the Police!”
Week2: “Where are the Police?”
“Council President Lisa Bender, who was among those leading the call to overhaul the department, suggested that officers were being defiant. Her constituents say officers on the street have admitted that theyre purposely not arresting people who are committing crimes”
This is exactly what you wanted.
Reap what you sow....
What gray matter?....cmon man....
As has been noted before, leftists are born without the ability to detect or identify irony.
“You never miss the water till the well runs dry!”
Introducing the Minneapolis City Council: “This is Ron! This in Ron! The rest are Mo’ Rons!”
‘
Your police force is being rapidly dispersed to other venues, or resigning from the profession altogether. With no support from the elected officials, like mayors, councilmen or prosecuting attorneys, the practice of turning loose the perps within hours of their apprehension makes the remaining officers loathe to make the arrest in the first place. Add to that the difficulty of complying with all the various “rules of engagement” piled on the policeman on the scene, and there is strong inclination to “look the other way”.
Jamal, when you smack your weiner with a hammer, it hurts.
You can’t make up the term “violence interrupters.” These hardy souls will be there before the guns are fired to interrupt them. I fear the only thing to be interrupted will be the potential target. Instead of another miscreant or hapless victim, the first shot will be directed to the “violence interrupters.” Seems like a very short-term position with lots of openings.
Oh my goodness they are street racing!! Yes there are accidents and yes there are deaths but if there was a list of important crimes this would be very close to the bottom.
