I could be mistaken, but i believe the purpose was to guide a radio frequency skipping torpedo guidance system. The Navy didn't adopt it, some thought because she was a woman, though I suspect a major technological change like that would be difficult to adopt in the climate of 1942. They did adopt it, I believe in the 60s, after her, and her partners patent ran out.
Her first husband Friedrich Mandl was an interesting character too. One of the largest arms manufacturers in Europe supplying everyone, a Jew socially in the company of Hitler and Mussolini was said to have arranged an Austrian Italian alliance to thwart Hitler. Hedy fled him, lots of his money had already fled, he fled Austria for Brazil then Argentina, where he became a major arms manufacturer and confidant to Peron. Later returning to Austria. Interesting lives
