During arms reduction negotiations with the soviets in the '70s, the FB-111 was their most feared US weapon system.
“I’ll take 2 F-22s over 10 F-35s any day of the week and twice on Sunday.”
Apples and oranges. Your arguing that Apples are way more red than oranges. So what? Different planes, different jobs.
Pilots I have talked to like the F-35. I will trust the jet jockeys over the keyboard jockeys.
“Strap one bomb on the jet and there goes your stealth.”
False. They make a stealthy pod with doors on the bottom to drop a bomb out of.
The F-35 is a jack of all trades, master of none. You can’t win a modern war without controlling the skies. It just doesn’t happen. You control the skies with air dominance fighters like the F-22. Then you bring in specialized strike fighters and bombers.
This idea of one plane that does everything (poorly) is terrible. And it’s a big reason why a lot of allies pulled out of the JSF and went other directions.
missed the pointless point
Like the F35, you didnt see it, huh?

FB-111 was a nuke strike platform, and the Soviets feared all out nuke platforms, even the B-52 (cruise missiles).
To be clear, the JSF was sold as a multi-mission platform and a couple small bombs doesn’t really meet the load requirement for an A/G mission.
The F-22 also has A/G capability, and it’s door, to drop a couple SDBs, JDAMS, whatever, is a more A/G capable platform than the JSF—and the F-22 was never designed to do a strike mission or a full A/G mission. Ever watch the bomb-bay doors open and then slam shut on the F-22? I have and the JSF is a poor jet when you talk bombing stealth and A/G.
Stealthy pod? A reduced RCS (not stealth) is more accurate.
You Boeing guys will never give up.
And to be clear, EVERY pilot loves whatever jet he flies.
(This former A-10 and F-15E fighter pilot has lived that life, so using your standard, you can trust me. Seriously, you can because ALL pilots are proud of the jet they strap into.)
Yes, fully agree with you.
The soviets specifically tried to eliminate the FB-111 from our inventory by negotiation. No other US weapon system was specified for that treatment.
“The F-35s clear a path with internal ordinance and then F-15s and B-52s follow and pound the enemy.”
JSF will have a hard time doing that with one or two internal bombs.
“If I recall the one F-117 that was shot down in Kosovo was painted when they opened their bomb bay doors and the bad guys fired a volley of SAMS.”
And because of strict ROE and route placement, after about day three our jets would fly in from one direction and fly out on the same ground track the other jets did for the last few days. So. . .bad guys waited for the predictable jet flying a predictable path popped up for a brief moment and all was lost.
Hah. . . good one!
The B-52 was. . .too include all the B-52’s in mothballs at the boneyard in Davis Monthan AFB, AZ.
The US viewed the FB-111 as a tactical nuke jet and not a strategic strike platform. . .therefore, for us, we didn’t bring it up when negotiating reduction of STRATEGIC nuke assets.
To be clear, we were negotiating strategic reduction of strategic platforms and the FB-111 was not considered a strategic asset by the US but the Soviets didn’t buy our distinction and insisted the FB-111’s be included.
I recall the naysayers were by far mostly dems and MSM.
Yup. . .I will stand by Boeing commercial jets all the way. . .
35 number only good from the front
Don’t see numbers for SU-35, 57, J10, J20 are most likely fighters to face in peer conflict.
R77/74 AAM will be on all those, and they will see them the same way the 22 and 35 do: via AWACs
