One father was killed and three people were hospitalized this week after a massive semi-truck caused an 11-vehicle collision along a California highway. The California Highway Patrol on Tuesday confirmed that a horrendous crash had taken place at 5:40pm on Interstate 5 in south Sacramento. It would result in the death of Joel Broussard, a 39-year-old father and former mayoral candidate in the nearby city of Elk Grove. ...

This happened two days ago and we still don't know the name of the truck driver. The CHP has already ruled out drugs and alcohol. It looks very much like what happened at the Christmas Market in France several years ago.

Fell asleep, probably.

fell asleep

or deliberate

i thought trucks had special air brakes that even though they cant stop all that weight quickly, once deployed if there are brake problems they still keep working

“Fell asleep, probably.”

Happens too often. I am always very wary of semi’s. I keep a close eye on them and make it a point to plan for the worst as they approach or I approach them. I view all semi’s as impending disaster.

“once deployed if there are brake problems they still keep working”

Standard air brakes.

Remove the air pressure and they are locked on. And will stay locked until air pressure is returned.

They are not special.

As a driver of a diesel pickup and heavy 5th wheel trailer, I view ALL drivers of four wheeled vehicle’s a pending disaster!

No.
They operate by air but if the system loses air the brakes will all lock up.
Air pressure is what actually releases the brakes in truck air brake systems.
There is no dead man type switch.

Greater majority of them don’t realize it is four wheel DRIVE, not four wheel STOP until it is too late.

You a ‘hot shot’ contractor?

I am basically an ‘expediter/long distance courier’ with my own vehicle— now Suburban (about as much as I really want to handle), was F250 Van.

Am now at the stage where I consider less than 100 mi a ‘local’.

I’ve come to respect and admire the guys and gals that wheel the 50 ton rigs around the country for a living, they are pro’s for the most part, but with that much size and weight when they mess up, it’s spectacular in a very bad way!

A pickup whether or not it’s towing a 5th wheeler IS NOT the same as a semi.
That said, good for you. Awareness on the road is never a bad thing.

Two wrecks in Austin I recall hearing about:

A trailer of pigs that overturned and the able-bodied ones that lived went everywhere. Local news were asking that captured pigs please be turned in. I doubt anyone saavy enough to capture one returned it!

Another trailer full of Snickers bars overturned and somehow caught fire. Once the chocolate, caramel, and nuggat started to melt and the sugar in it began burn, there was no stopping it.

Same here. I refuse to drive next to them whenever possible and give them plenty of space when I am trailing them. I also stay in the right lane 99% of the time as most accidents occur with needless passing and lane changes.

He was swerving a little before he hit the cars. His truck veered to the right and he corrected back into the lane.

It looked out of control but I guess we’ll have to wait to find out why, or whatever excuse they use to cover up something more sinister.

Wise. As a former truck driver I say that.
Falling asleep, not seeing you, mechanical failure, tire blowouts, falling loads. stay away as much as possible.
We should all minimize our exposure to acceptable risk as much as we can.
It’s more acceptable that way.

I had to get out of driving, becoming diabetic really changed my way of thinking about being the pilot of 80,000 lbs of responsibility.

Besides, I’m really a mechanic, driving bored the hell out of me really bad.
