A major American city may soon allow 16-year-olds to vote — and others could follow suit

San Francisco residents will be casting ballots in November to determine not just who should be in the White House, but if the city should be allowing 16- and 17-year-olds to vote in local elections.

A similar measure introduced in 2016 narrowly failed with 48 percent of the vote, but local activists and organizers are confident that it will pass that this time.

“I really think that Vote 16 will help youth of color in San Francisco establish the habit of voting at an earlier age, and really provide them with the support and the resources that they need to continue building on that habit as they grow older,” said Crystal Chan, an 18-year old organizer for Vote 16 SF who fought to get the measure on the ballot.

If the proposition passes, San Francisco would become the first major American city to give 16- and 17-year-olds the right to vote in municipal elections. But the question remains: what would be improved by lowering the voting age by just two years?

“Research is clear on this, that voting is a habit. And 16 is a better time than 18 to establish that habit,” Brandon Klugman, Vote 16's campaign manager, told NBC News. “Our motivation here first and foremost is to make sure that we put new voters in a position to establish that habit in the first election they're eligible for, and then to continue participating throughout their lives which is good for democracy on every level.”

Remember when they told us a childs' brain didn't fully form until about 24 so we had to overlook crimes teen criminals committed?

Why not vote at 14?

Why not let a single mother vote for herself and each child she has?

Hey, just scrap voting all together and let the Democrats have permanent power here. You know, if only 40 million of us went to Mexico we could literally take it over, kill all of the drug dealers and whomever needed to be eliminated in that business, and turn Mexico into a wonderful country. I am serious.

They made a movie about something like this in 1968 called “Wild in the Streets”.

Oh, and on the way out, burn down everything we’ve built...to the ground and all non-portable assets destroyed. Start over again down there and build a new country. Most of the working Mexicans are here anyway. Don’t let them return to Mexico. They have to stay here with the Democrats.

On your parent’s insurance until you’re 26 because it is just to much to expect of a “young person?” Yet, they are wise enough to vote, even to cancel out their parents’/providers’ votes?

San Francisco is a lost cause. A cancer in our midst.

Yep, this going to work well ... non-educated, indoctrinated, no world experience brats voting. Yep, going to work and end well. But hey, falls in line with the Left and their ‘no voter ID’ argument while you need an ID for virtually everything else in every day life....gg

Tie the voting age, the drinking age, the age to buy tobacco, and the age of enlistment together. If you are old enough to do one, you are old enough to do them all.

“The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.”

The 26th amendment does not specify that one must be 18 years of age to vote, but simply that those 18 and over are eligible to vote.

“Research is clear on this. . . “ Oh, is that so? Exactly where was it tried before?

Those are just trigger words for “science is on our side”.

That's the argument to use. If they're old enough to vote, they're old enough to be tried as an adult.

Doesn’t Congress have to legislate the legal voting age, and the Bill has to be signed by the President in order for it to become law? I had to be 21 to vote back in 1968, and it wasn’t long after, because of the Vietnam War that Congress reduced the legal age to 18.

If Democrats could get the Supreme Court to go along with abortion/infanticide up to the age of, and including the age of 16, they’d go for it.

You can be certain the Dems polled this age group to death to make sure it would help, not hurt them.

“…what would be improved by lowering the voting age by just two years?“

Obviously everybody would get more free stuff from the government. More free stuff enriches our live in innumerable ways. It relieves the young of the burden of learning a trade or profession and finding their own way in life.

“Our motivation here first and foremost is to make sure that we put new voters in a position to establish that [voting] habit in the first election they're eligible for...

Yeah, I’m sure that’s their motivation. I’m sure it has nothing to do with electing Democrats from here to eternity.

What little kid won’t vote for Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Great Pumpkin?
