I'll take a guess here. But it's why I pinged a good legal mind.

A police officer does an interview with a witness, suspect, or victim. The officer can be called to the stand and be asked questions about what he was told. I think the prosecutors put themselves in this position by interviewing someone who is going to be called to testify.
