President Trump nominated foreign-policy expert William Ruger for U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan on Thursday in a move speculated to help reduce U.S. troops in the area after nearly 20 years of war.

The announcement comes just a week before Afghanistan and the Taliban are expected to begin peace talks. Ruger, “a veteran of the Afghanistan War and an officer in the United States Navy (Reserve Component),” will replace John Bass, who left the ambassadorship in January.

Somehow bit uncomfortable sending a decent man to that forsaken place. He will be a perennial target of the Taliban. If Trump had a sense of irony he would send a Democrat SJW woman to serve there. The Democrats are always screaming that Afghanistan was the good war intended to improve the lot of women in a traditional, repressive society. These SJW types willingly shed the blood of decent people to signal their great virtue.

The best way to prevent Afghanistan poppy crops is to try to prevent Pakistan meddling with that country. Afghanistan used to be a nation on its way to a fairly modern economy before Pakistan inflicted the Taliban on it - now its largest cash crop is opium. We need to withdraw - we've shed enough American blood in the longest war in US history in Afghanistan. But we can stop enabling Pakistan's corruption of Afghanistan with our tax dollars.

We will never divest from Afghanistan, and we never should. We need to make the largest, softest, footprint possible in that country.

This is real and very strategic, because, if we dont have it, some one (China) else will.

Our moves as a nation are becoming very important, as China becomes increasingly more adventurous.
