Taiwan asserts sovereignty over the mainland. It’s a two edged sword. I have only been to Taiwan once, as a USAF contractor, and have met and drank with TAF major-generals, and junior officers. I am not convinced they want to raise the temperature in Taiwan-China relations.

Taiwan is a beautiful place. Formosa means beautiful island in Portuguese. The people are wonderful and deserving of the place they have created. The thought of them falling under Mainland tyranny is sickening to me.

I agree, and I am aware of the history between the Mainland and Taiwan. At the same time, President Trump is very strategic. It may be time for us to scrap the “One-China” policy, and it would be better to do so before the CCP gets stronger militarily.

We must remember that the whole engagement policy with the CCP over the past 50 years was predicated on the idea that ‘opening China’ would lead to the freedom of the Chinese people. That has not happened so that policy has clearly failed.

It is time to try a different approach.
