China asserts sovereignty over Taiwan. The U.S. is ambiguous. After Nixon “opened up” to China, the U.S. closed its embassy and does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Under the 1972 Defense of Taiwan Act, the U.S. military is obliged to defend Taiwan if the president determines that China has attacked Taiwan.
