China asserts sovereignty over Taiwan. The U.S. is ambiguous. After Nixon “opened up” to China, the U.S. closed its embassy and does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Effectively, what are diplomatic relations with Taiwan are fulfilled by a private foundation “sponsored” by the State Department.

Under the 1972 Defense of Taiwan Act, the U.S. military is obliged to defend Taiwan if the president determines that China has attacked Taiwan.

The way China’s economy is heading, they probably have no choice But to attack Taiwan.

At the risk of sounding presumptious, deep down, I think this may actually change in a Trump Second Term. All the more reasons why so many cockroaches are coming out of the baseboards.
