So there's a special animosity for English speaking Canadians? Yes,my visits were all in a car with Massachusetts plates but it must be said that some of the unpleasantness I've experienced was on foot...no US plates involved.

Maybe they just assumed I was Canadian.

That’s been the case as long as I can remember. Its very deep rooted and goes back centuries to conflicts between England and France but especially the fall of Quebec which they call the conquest. Americans given that they fought England in the revolution get a pass like I said but I also sense the right left conflict has entered the equation somewhat and there is some anti American strain in there too now. Of course like you said many fine individuals are there but that is my general reading of the underlying currents.
