The National Rifle Associations former second-in-command is breaking with the groups orthodoxy and calling for universal background checks and so-called red flag laws in a new book assailing the organization as more focused on money and internal intrigue than the Second Amendment, while thwarting constructive dialogue on gun violence.
The former executive, Joshua L. Powell, who was fired by the N.R.A. in January, reinforces the kind of criticism made of the organization by gun control groups and state regulators, but it is the first critical look at its recent history by such a high-ranking insider.
He describes the N.R.A.s longtime chief executive, Wayne LaPierre, as a woefully inept manager, but also a skilled lobbyist with a deft touch at directing President Trump to support the groups objectives, and who repeatedly reeled in the presidents flirtations with even modest gun control measures.
The book, Inside the N.R.A.: A Tell-All Account of Corruption, Greed, and Paranoia Within the Most Powerful Political Group in America, is to be published next week, the latest public calamity for an organization that has faced years of headlines detailing allegations of corruption, infighting and even its infiltration by a Russian agent.
The attorney general of New York, Letitia James, is also seeking to dissolve the group, in a lawsuit filed last month that names both Mr. LaPierre and Mr. Powell among four individual defendants from whom it is seeking millions of dollars in restitution.

Infiltration; not invasion
Mono Labe.
A never was who is irrelevant. Him being fired is all you have to know.
....MOLON LABE....?? “mono labe” sounds like some sort of dread disease......
The news media has since 1962 been trying to destroy the NRA. Anyone who doubts should look up “Herblock anti-gun cartoons”. Also hit the Related Searches: “anti-gun control cartoon” button to see more vile cartoons by others.
They even tried to organize an NRA alternative decades ago, that masqueraded as a pro-gun pro-hunting organization but actually was very anti-gun. That went down quick.
Disgrunteled ex employees have learned how to be Queens for the Day. Some of you are old enough to remember that. Or, put a modern spin on it. Either way is pretty good.
LMAO! People who are fired have zero credibility. They are fired because they are LOSERS!
Following accusations of sexual harassment, a former top executive for the National Rifle Association has been ousted at the pro-gun organization according to an email from its general counsel, Newsweek first reported.
Court filings first reported by the Washington Post on Friday first suggested that Powell was “on leave” due to an NRA counsel investigation into a sexual harassment dispute with the NRA’s advertising firm Ackerman McQueen. The organization’s general counsel, John Frazer, clarified to the board of directors in an email that Powell was “no longer employed by the NRA.”
Good grief. The NRA has been engaged in every single infringement of the Second Amendment since the beginning in 1871. Ok maybe that is a slight exaggeration but selective and very slow infringement especially since the 1968 law and sitting on the fence trying to make love to both political parties is a losing position in today’s world. Giving your sworn enemy an A rating just to appease Democrats in a fight to protect FREEDOM, seems to me a treasonous approach to your eventual demise.
I’m a Neal Knox NRA kind of individual, not the Board of Directors, Wayne LaPierre kind of NRA. Off and on member since 1955. Not sure what the last straw was. Probably the first weapons ban the 1986 law.
True that.
Yes, when I read, fired by the N.R.A. in January, I didnt have to read any further.
I trust nothing the NYT prints, but if it is true, then yes, we had a true traitor in our midst.
It sounds like the guy is still number two.
"...Off and on member..."
So an NRA employee gets fired, gets angry, and speaks out against the employer who fired him. Wow, big news. Now when is his book coming out?
