Citing catastrophic collapse of economy, Mayor Lori Lightfoot says Chicago faces $1.2 billion shortfall in 2021 pandemic budget
Citing the catastrophic collapse of our local and national economy because of COVID-19 and damage to local businesses from civil unrest, Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Monday laid out a $1.2 billion shortfall for what she called Chicagos pandemic budget in 2021.
Filling the historic deficit will likely require personnel cuts and could lead to layoffs, and the mayor promised to use a TIF surplus and consider a computer lease tax as other potential measures. Lightfoot made no mention of a possible property tax hike in her remarks.
Asked afterward for specifics about cuts or taxes, Lightfoot said that all options are on the table, though property taxes and job cuts are at the back of her list.
The reality is that life will be different for the foreseeable future, impacting how services are provided and how departments are structured, and we must adjust to meet that reality, Lightfoot said in an afternoon speech at the Cultural Center.
A very difficult part of reimagining government will also include looking to our workforce, and making needed changes in places that are not being fully utilized during the remainder of this crisis and in our post-COVID-19 world, she said.
Lightfoot largely avoided discussion about the citys rising pension costs, aside from calling for state lawmakers to work together and solve the problem. But alluding to the issue, Lightfoot pushed back against Republican critics who say the federal government shouldnt help blue cities and states such as Chicago and Illinois because their budget woes are a result of years of mismanagement.

Summary: “If stupidity got us into this mess, why can’t it get us out?”
yup! how that fake-named HilLIARy campaign manager ever became mayor of a great city like NYC is appalling.
but he sure reminds us how lucky we were to not elect HilLIARy or her D gang!
Inform all the wealthy liberals living on the Gold Coast that they’re going to have their taxes increased.
Tell them that they should be happy they are paying more taxes in return for a “better” Chicago.
You should never make Ewoks Mayors
Zactly...raise teacher’s salaries..cut police funding..and raise taxes.
That is chump change compared to how big of a hole Fred Flintstone (Gov Pritzker) is digging the state into with his Covid testing schemes un-used makeshift hospitals and endless shutdowns. If Biden doesn’t get in and bail Illinois out this state is going to collapse financially. And these politicians know it!!
Trump wasn't supposed to win...
Maybe she can just change the numbers on the machine and get more printed.
Black faces in high places.........
BACK to the drawing board............
PLUS-—THEY want those jobs based on skin color-—NOT MERIT....NO THANKS
I take it you didn’t detect the sarcasm in my post...
Tough. No money for you! You ruined your city.
WHO would have ever guessed that Oprah would bolt before all of this happened???
LOL, your sarcasm was subtle and I’m slow on the uptake......
What could possibly have caused it. Can’t be shutting down the economy.
The notion that you would try to tax your way out of an economic crisis of this magnitude defies most economic analysis, Msall said. So lets make sure that not just Chicago or Illinois, but every large municipality in the country realizes that in order to have a full economic recovery, we need basic services, and that means federal help.
Lightfoot is getting a crash course in economics. Unfortunately, she won’t learn anything.
I’ll give Groot a thousand bucks for that Picasso statue in Dalely Plaza. That should help her out a little. And there’s a couple of things in the museum I might bid on, too.
Lori, ask Soros for the billion.
