Would someone not named Kennedy have been re-elected over and over to the Senate after causing the death of a young woman?
When JFK gave up his Senate seat to become President, Teddy was too young to become Senator, so they had a family friend serve as Senator for two years. Then in 1962 as soon as he was 30 years old he ran and was elected. His opponent in that race pointed out that if his name had been Edward Moore instead of Edward Moore Kennedy, his candidacy would have been a joke.
