Moderna increases minority numbers in its vaccine trial, but still not meeting Fauci's goal

(CNN) Moderna, the first US company to begin Phase 3 clinical trials of a coronavirus vaccine in the US, increased its enrollment of minorities this week, but is still not even close to the levels requested by Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

So far, 24% of study participants "are from communities of color," according to postings on the company's website and Twitter account. Last week, the company said 18% of the participants were minorities, which they said included "Black or African American, Latinx, American Indian, and Alaskan Native."

To be representative, vaccine trials should enroll minorities in percentages similar to their representation in the population. Moderna's 24% is well below that mark, as about 18% of the US population is Latino, 13% is Black, and a little over 1% is American Indian or Alaskan Native, according to US Census data.

Covid-19 vaccine trials have been slow to recruit Black and Latino people -- and that could delay a vaccine Covid-19 vaccine trials have been slow to recruit Black and Latino people -- and that could delay a vaccine Fauci told CNN recently that he wanted to see minorities enrolled in coronavirus vaccine trials at levels at least double their percentages in the population, because Covid-19 has hit those groups especially hard. That would mean at least 66.4% of the volunteers would be from those four groups.

FALSIE is looking for all possible excuses to delay approval of any vaccine, IMHO. That’s as predictable as predicting the sun will rise tomorrow.

CNN of course got it wrong, moderna has not been slow to recruit, it’s that black and Latinos have not been volunteering and hard to get the to volunteer.

I got the second shot Thursday.... think I got the real one not the placebo

And if they use more they will be accused of using minority’s as guinea pigs.

You have to be able to convince them to try the untested. Ain’t gonna fly in those communities

I do clinical trials as part of my day job. Blacks and Latinos consistently are at percentages far lower than their population representation, and also below their representation afflicted by the disease state, no matter the disease being studied.

I guess it’s as difficult getting adequate numbers of minorities to volunteer for (non-paid) clinical trials as it is getting them to sign up as organ donors.

I feel that Fauci should have to roll up his sleeve for everyone of them.

Why should it matter? Are they saying that there are differences between races? Shocking.

Democrats shouldn't get their hopes up for chaos and Biden. The last trials have been in process and are not delayed at all. President Trump has done more than any other president could do to stop the virus and keep as many Americans as possible safe.

If you think you did, you probably did. Good work! Thanks for supporting American freedom in more ways than one! I hope that wide distribution begins before the election.

Thank you for your courage. Anyone who puts their life on the line with an exponential vaccine for the rest of the citizens is to be respected like us veteran’s who did the same with guns and bullets flying. Well done sir.
