That is a great question! And it is yet another case where I wish the Founders had been more explicit. The sticking point is, of course, the phrase “well-regulated”. Too many liberal states twist that phrase all out of its original meaning.
I would agree with you that 16 or 17 would seem to be reasonable age. But that doesn’t mean a 16-year-old kid has the same emotional maturity as someone who’s, say, 35.
Again, I’m not arguing that Rittenhouse did anything wrong. I’m saying his buddies should not have dragged him into this situation.
Are you a veteran ? Have you been in combat? The buddy system works well but not flawlessly. I suspect that Kyle had a “buddy” as well. But in the fog of war buddys can and do get separated. We in my “group” train for that possibility. It happens even to the most experienced.
