Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe intends to resign for health reasons, local media reported Friday.

Abe plans to step down to deal with a health problem, national broadcaster NHK reported citing sources close to the prime minister. Kyodo News also reported that Abe plans to resign, citing a source from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

Abe had been scheduled to hold a press conference at 5 p.m. local time.

CNBC has not independently confirmed the reports.

Stocks in Japan briefly fell after the reports.

Not a good thing. Japan also has a swamp, and they’ve dislike Abe for years. I hope he has a strong follow up person.

It would really be the end of an era. He’s on his fourth term right now. Non-consecutive. He spent a year as prime minister in 2006 and 2007. maybe the most successful Japanese prime minister ever.

The Japanese swamp is involved in the Nissan-Ghosn debacle.

There are dark forces in Japan.

So does he have colon cancer?

Maybe only in Japan would a PM resign and apologize to the citizens.

I know people discount the UC side effects. But constantly having explosive bowel movement can often only be controlled by removing part of the colon.

It is not easy to deal with. My sympathies to anyone who has to deal with it.

It’s not cancer. It’s colitis. He has had this for many years. But as it gets worse it is sometimes only controlled through surgery.

It’s really not something I would wish on anyone. Well, almost no one.

Must be horrendous if one of the biologics can’t control it. Poor man. Wish him the best.

Power is the strongest addictive substance. Ask Ted Kennedy, John McCain, and Robert Byrd.

He’s been suffering with ulcerative colitis since he was a teenager. Despite this, he’s served as Japan’s PM for more years than any other PM.
