I would think that drop dead simple for that solution would be far preferable.

Fewer things to break or malfunction.

Simple is elegant, and reliable.

The remaining problem though, is the doors left open for months on end. Additionally, there is also a scalability problem, where bigger rivers need bigger gates, because of bigger debris buildup (like whole trees).

The swing gates make bigger openings for bigger rivers, and having a bridge right alongside the gates, makes them much more convenient to guard, and be able to respond to either river bank, even during a flood.

Hopefully, more advantages and new features will become evident, as we see these new designs build out and operate.
