I read that Rittenhouse got separated from the group he was with by the police, who would not let him return to the group he was with earlier.
I don't think everything the author says is correct, but I did see the police giving water to the young men guarding the gas station and the auto repair facility next door at 5912 Sheridan earlier in the evening in a live stream.
And it makes sense that Rittenhouse would obey a police order to not return to the area. That is how he got cut off. Sadly the police seem to have caused a lot of the problem by not maintaining order in the first place and then separating people trying to protect property from each other.
Once the mob started after Rittenhouse he didn't have a choice but to defend himself.
