What if they were chasing you because they felt you had threatened them by brandishing a weapon? What if they thought you were a dangerous gunman who needed to be subdued? IOW, if he provoked their action, what does that do to his self defense claim? I’m not saying he didn’t legitimately act in self defense, just trying to anticipate the counterarguments.
In re to your what if question, he was running away. So they dont apply imo.
If a terrible man breaks into my home and does all sorts of terrible things and then runs away I should not shoot him as he runs.
So even if this boy did something bad they still should not have been chasing him down. It is not their job to detain him and I doubt they was their intent anyway.

As soon as the gunman retreated (in this case running away as fast as he could) the threat was gone.
In the courtroom I would think that the “intent” of the various actors would come into play. (Or maybe not - I’m no legal guy). But one guy has a lit molotov and was probably going to toss it into one of the vehicles that had their windows broken just moments before.
The other guy has a gun and telling him to stop.
