How widespread were the 60’s riots and unrest compared to now?

I was a kid in Dayton OH when the riots broke out in 1967-68. I would say in terms of spread nationwide, these riots are about the same. The biggest difference is few localities tolerated the riots and there were literally tanks in the street and guardsmen on every corner. Liberal politicians may have sympathized with the goals of the rioters but there was pretty much zero tolerance for the rioters themselves. The riots, because they were met with force, did not simmer for months. The riots in Detroit were the most devastating of that era and the city never recovered from them.
