Chinese Vaccine Giant Price COVID Dose 36 Times Higher than Oxford University's

Chinese-state owned pharmaceutical giant, Sinopharm, has priced their experimental COVID-19 vaccine at 1,000 yuan ($145 USD), a number 36 times higher than the vaccine candidate from Oxford University.

Sinopharm Chairman Liu Jingzhen estimated the value of the company's two-dose vaccine on Tuesday, according the Guangming Daily. However, it was unclear if he was referring to the retail or wholesale cost of the drug, which is estimated to be available this December.

In comparison, a vaccine being developed in partnership from Oxford University and drug maker AstraZenca is offering the cheapest price point per dose at $4, when it will be sold to the British government. AstraZenca has been heavily supported by the government, which has allowed the giant to stick to non-profit principles.

The vaccine from Oxford is in its last stage of clinical trials.

Newsweek reached out to Sinopharm for comment but did not hear back before publication.

In the U.S., Johnson & Johnson has priced their vaccine candidate at $10 per dose and agreed to provide the government with 100 million doses. Pfizer has also signed a deal with the U.S. government. The pharmaceutical giant's chief executive Albert Bourla told The Wall Street Journal that Pfizer's vaccine would cost $20.

Federal health officials announced last week that once a COVID-19 vaccine becomes available, it will be free for all Americans. The government is prepared to deliver and pay for hundreds of millions of doses. Health care professionals who administer the drug will need to be paid, but these costs should be covered by health insurers.

The Chinese government has not yet specified whether a vaccine for coronavirus would be covered under the country's mandatory and free immunization program.

It doesn’t matter how they price the stuff. Who’s gonna buy it?

Sometimes I think we life in the freerepublic echo chamber. I think a lot of people after the media hype and scare would buy a vaccine, much to a cross section of Freepers who readily and freely promote they would never get a Corona vaccine period.

We are not always in touch with the majority of middle America on this forum.

I think what you see among the anti-vaxxers is still a small but VERY vocal minority. I guarantee you if you actually heard from everyone at FreeRepublic, you’d get similar results to the general public. Namely, 70 - 90% happily in line to get the vaccine.

Some may hold off a few weeks just to be sure, but once they hear “Bob” got it and is fine, they’ll be in line to get their dose too. And this whole COVID business (i.e. the shutdowns, the masks, the social distancing - all of it) will end not with a bang, but with a quiet whimper as the virus runs out of vulnerable hosts and vanishes into the history books.

Wonder if Trump would let the Chinese vaccine into this country? Couldn’t trust it not to be something else...harmful.

Who would buy a vaccine from China? Was this their original purpose, to create a bioweapon and then make a killing on selling the vaccine for it? For all you know, it could be contaminated with COVID.

YES. True — thank goodness.

It will be a cold day in hell before I get a vaccine.

Which is totally your choice. But it is. NOT representative of the position of the vast majority of Americans. As such As a group people always saying I never will get one tends to make you all look a little neurotic. Get one fine. Don’t get one. Fine. We all don’t have to know every reason why or why not you make a decision. It gets tiresome. We are aware of the conspiracy theories that grip the anti-Vaxers.

“Get one fine. Don’t get one.”

I am a cancer survivor (rare blood cancer/lymphoma — direct immune system impact) and a former dialysis patient. Do you honestly believe that I should risk my recovery from these two debilitating and life-threatening conditions to treat a disease that is primarily a political disease?

So far, common sense avoidance has worked pretty well for me. That’s what I will continue to do — and without a vaccine.

How does this sound: “it’s my body and no one has a right to tell me what to do with my own body?” Sound familiar? If it works for killing babies it should work for me.

What did I say to indicate anything differently? I said get one, fine, don’t get one, fine.

However it seems to me that if I had the conditions outlined that I would probably get the vaccination
