What a cool song!
Graduated school there in 1961. Served on USS Jallao (SS-368)
very good website, station hypo, Red Austin
I went in 1962 and the 105’ free ascent tank ‘got me’.
Rode the ‘elevator’ down and my head ‘virtually’ blew up.
The adventure probably ‘broke’ my sinuses and compounded my tinnitus.
Can’t ‘explain’ the feeling of having to ride the elevator back up— one of those experiences that you ‘had to have been there’.
‘Up side’ (I guess) was I had a few (8??) of my classmates on the Thresher (RIP) and I had requested that ‘style’ boat. Didn’t really know them, just recognized the names when I copied them in a message.
I was RM2 and did a stint at Base MAA while awaiting orders to the Pentagon. (Lived in the Old Brig)
Hope YOUR med records were kept better than mine, between a hernia op at USNH Yokosuka in 59 and my experience at NL one would hardly know it if hadn’t been there....
Laurenmarlowe, I remember the Submarine Base, Groton and New London well! ;-)
Coming up from 50 feet with no breathing apparatus is my most fond memory because I did not think that it was possible but I was young and stupid. ;-)
I went in very early ‘63. I got to the base at 4:20 A.M. on New Year’s Day.
I think they were called grinders or hoagies or heroes before submarines...
My biggest culture shock was going from NY to CA and in boot camp (think we had Christmas Liberty??) but my whole company was basically from SoCal & Arizona (sponsored by the LA Rams) they were getting ready to go on liberty and hunt some (what us easterners knew as a ‘rooster’ or male thing) and I wondered what I had gotten myself into but ‘they’ explained that is what we call cat was to them.
(Or something like that)
Coming up from 50 feet with no breathing apparatus

In 1962 I think they had told us to grab your nose and ‘package’ with the theory being that it would keep one straight on the free ascent.
Guess it was safer than crossing the street with all the swimmers and escape hatches in the tank.
Ref my #65.....
Howdy, luvie.
Perfect graphic for the thread. But I do NOT know how you came up with an owl in a submarine. LOL!
Hey, radu!
I had to search HARD for that one. LOL! There is one sub that has an owl for a logo, but this one matches my other owls in various modes of transportation. :)
Finally saw Li’l Bit at her food dish tonight. I hadn’t seen her for several days and frankly was getting pretty worried. I haven’t seen Ghost in at least 1 1/2 weeks. Have no idea where he is. I fear someone saw his neck and called the pound or something else bad. I hope he wanders back up.
Howdy, my.
Luvie’s right ..... this thread is for YOU and your buddies.
And for the rest of us to enjoy as y’all chat about your memories. That’s the fun part about these Road Trip threads. :-)
Ya done good, I have to say. LOL
Yikes! I didn’t know you were missing kitties! Glad Li’l Bit showed up. I pray Ghost shows up soon. Not like him to be gone this long, is it?
I don’t think Hog Head has left the carport other than to potty since he came back. He showed up the initial day and went off for three days. He must have spotted that d*** coydog and figured out staying put was the wise way to go.
I have GOT to come up with a real name for that cat. LOL
Us Nukes don’t get to go to Sub School...but I spent three months there in early ‘89 learning how to be a welder—every boat goes to sea with at least two...in case some piping of significance breaks and needs to be welded at sea.
I remember how cold it was there, in the winter....one night the fire alarm went off in the barracks I was staying in...had to stand outside in my underwear in -30 degree and windy weather until the fire department came and gave the all clear....BBBRRRRRRR.....
No, I don’t think he’s ever been away this long. Last time I saw him he was crossing from the other side of the street to ours. He ate with Li’l Bit on the front porch a few times, but has been gone so long. But he IS the Ghost, and maybe he’ll materialize again soon. *poof*
It’s definitely worrisome that he’s been gone so long. I hope he pops up SOON.
How's everyone doing this morning?
Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))
Did you get more vine-cutting done before the heat of the day set in? You were probably ready to join Gizmo in the lake afterwards. LOL
Comanche Lake:
,
I do, too. I’ll let you know if he does, or if I see him wandering around “his” neighborhood.
I think I’ll go. I didn’t sleep well last night. Should do better tonight since it’s already 77 and will get down to 70. THAT’S more like it! Even though it’ll soar back up, I’ll enjoy it tonight. LOL!
See ya for the quiz tomorrow night!
