The comments on this were pretty interesting.

I just think this stuff is cool.

I guess one of the questions I would ask is if you are building an AI based drone fighter would you build it on the chassis of an existing fighter or would it look more like a sleek “Cylon” craft that did not have a cockpit area (or any of the stuff that goes along with it?). Would be like a flying wing?

Induces another order of magnitude of differential in asynchronous warfare. If can’t win against robots, go where robots aren’t - but their operators care about.

If AI robot soldiers and fighter planes can defeat humans and human operated tanks/planes how will we ever win if they turn on us in a Terminator/Skynet situation? I’m getting a bit nervous about AI.

If you’re in a dogfight you’ve already lost the war.

Dogfights are passe.

I was starting to be impressed until late in the story it was revealed that this Heron system was embedded in a virtual F-16.

I got the impression from the first part of the story that it was head to head aerial combat. So all of this was done on a simulator?

The problem with simulators is the ROEs and outcomes are controlled by software, not reality.

“Heron, a small, female- and minority-owned company with offices in Maryland and Virginia, builds artificial intelligence agents”

China’s already got it. I wish that was sarcasm.

Rather chilling as far as I see it.
DARPA’s AlphaDogfight trials have officially come to a close with Heron Systems’ incredible artificial intelligence pilot system defeating not only its industry competitors, but going on to secure 5 straight victories against a highly trained U.S. Air Force F-16 pilot, without the human pilot scoring a single hit.

Interesting but it was all simulation.

The AI was not actually flying anything.

Put the AI into an actual aircraft and let real pilots give them a run.

That would be a real test.

We need to insure somehow that this stuff has an OFF switch somewhere. The greatest threat to humans that will come of this will be those dweebs who decide that AI has rights and fight us shutting it off when we need to.
