A civic obligation? How about putting pressure on the city "leadership" to quell the rioting, start supporting & stop demonizing the police, and allow the police to do their jobs to make NYC safe again?
The big banks in NYC (like my employer, unfortunately), have gone all-in on the sjw, blm message. Mandatory "diversity and inclusion" training, acknowledgement of so-called "white privilege", and other "feel-good" initiatives designed to keep the barbarians from storming their gates and to help mitigate any potential "discrimination" lawsuits. They will never vocally support the police even if they realize it makes their employees safer. The 'big-boys' all have private personal security and drivers, so they are insulated.
I have been working from home these last 6 months, as have most of the non client-facing employees so proof of concept has been well-established that the work can be done remotely, thereby eliminating the need to commute into NYC as well as the need to maintain the huge, expensive office buildings that serve as the bank's headquarters.
The criminals are emboldened and have nothing to fear from the police, thereby creating a dangerous environment in the cities. There is no need or desire to go back. Until there is a Giuliani-like, law & order renaissance in NYC, the city is dead.
Gee as a perk we can offer today only either BLM painted in front of your building or one week of rioting and looting. All your employees will automatically become Woke at no extra charge! Hurry don’t wait.

I live in Oklahoma. We have bad roads, hot weather, trailer parks, and only a very few cool things like museums or nice public parks. I have never resented my taxes supporting all the nice things and the high life styles and standard of living in New York and the Left Coast . . . so long as it keeps those people happy enough to stay there.

My brother works for a large investment bank in Manhattan and runs a department of about 20 people. Every single one of them has said “NO” loudly, clearly, and repeatedly when asked if they want to come back to the office.
Since they’ve started the work from home thing productivity is up 15%, absenteeism has plummeted, and their profitability is way up.
Oh, and the office space they used to inhabit ran over $400 a square foot.

The government administrators of the city of New York decided to place homeless druggies, alcoholics and mentally unstable in the empty hotels in Manhattan. This should be the factor that motivates anyone that can get out of New York city to do so. No one can depend on replacing the insane mayor and his minions, and even if possible it will take years to right the wrongs that have been committed by Blasio.
Those who move out had better be admonished to not vote Democrat where they end up.
I think this is part of the plan. The globalist left realizes their plan is in danger from the Trump doctrine that has been embraced by most of the states and smaller cities. Their only chance now is by destroying major cities and counting on the blue diaspora to transform red areas, which they will do, over the next few generations. This is the long plan.
