In the 70’s, the last time I was an employee, you were required to fill out 3 applications a week and you had to prove it to get your unemployment stipend, You had to GO to the Unemployment Office every WEEK!!, All Businesses with 25 or more employee’s were required to list their openings at the Unemployment Office for 2 weeks before they could look elsewhere. The unemployment office would do everything they could to match you with a JOB instead of GIVING AWAY Taxpayer Money . ALL Welfare required a Personal Visit to the Welfare Office to get your benefits every month,

I was running an Asphalt plant in NE Washington DC and had a steady stream of filling out the ‘I was looking’ cards.

Worst part was they would walk into my office and say ‘you not hiring are you’?

Asphalt Co, we were always ‘hiring’ so I would point to a truck coming out of the plant and tell him to go to the job and tell the foreman to call me.
99.99% of the time it was can’t today, will be in tomorrow...’Sign this?... Sure, tomorrow’
99.99% it was a no show.

Lest you think I was ‘hard on them’, I ALWAYS had a standing rule no matter where I worked...

“If a man shows up at 6 AM with his LUNCH, he has a job, sight unseen”
