Boise Mayor Lauren McLean was so sure that dark money operatives would buy televisions ads for her election bid last year that she didnt buy any herself.
Her campaign spent a few grand on Facebook and Google ads, but most of her $355,000 budget went to the practical expenses of running her 2019 campaign: staff, printing, mail, food, and related items. On paper, she had around $100,000 less than her opponent, fellow Democrat and at 16 years in office Boises longest-serving mayor, Dave Bieter.
But operating mostly off the books, a shadow campaign sent $310,000 in-state to blanket Boise in TV ads for McLeans benefit. A few bucks, $33,000, may have gone for City Council candidates, but the lions share, $233,690.49, was spent on McLean, carrying her to a 65%-to-35% victory over Bieter while breaking state records for outside spending on a municipal election.
Eight months after the election, none of those numbers have been reported by the Idaho press, yet all of it was cue a stormy night and some maniacal laughter dark money. Dark money out of let the thunder boom, Frau Blücher! Washington, D.C.

How much is being Mayor of Boise REALLY worth to somebody?
Democrats are only concerned about dark money when it funds Republican candidates. THEN it is a crisis - a corruption of the electoral process!
Yeah Idaho-Wake Up! -Before you turn into California.
Bad news...out of state and DC money stole the Boise mayoral election. It’s really bad news that the out-of-state crooks are targeting our fair state with their nefarious plots.
Before your government starts resettling thousands of "refugees" in your state.
Boise is one of the future technology hubs that will start getting a lot of attention. related?
The entire article is very enlightening about the huge web of organizations the Dems and their donors have erected to bring in big out-of-state money and to completely disguise its origins. Enlightening and very frightening. There is NOTHING like they deceitful web on the Constitutional right side.
The worst thing is she was able to couch this as donations and support from the League of Conservation Voters — who can be against a clean environment and more running trails?
Already happening in Idaho.
She didn't campaign like the carpet-bagging, east-coaster, socialist (Marxist?) that she is. But a careful observer could see that she was getting outside support. From signs to ads to multiple fawning articles in the "news" pamphlet (the once-great Statesman), she was very highly promoted by some behind-the-scenes forces.
Hopefully, she will be recalled and can return to her native Massachusetts.
Pittsburgh has become a technology hub. And that is NOT bringing the sort of voters here that one would prefer to have. Trust me on that.
thought the chinese were an issue in idaho
We visited Boise earlier this summer. My wife fell in love with it. It is a really lovely city with a close-in airport, excellent restaurant district, safe downtown, affordable homes. Metropolitan Boise (Ada and Canyon counties) has around 700,000 people, so it is not a backwater.
It is only a 10 hour drive between Boise and the SF Bay Area, and about 6 hours (440 miles) east of Portland.
Boise has regional influence. The university sports teams have given them national standing. Sadly it is being overrun by escapees from OR WA and CA.
This commie beeatch hid her commie identity pretty well. Mostly people were very tired of the 16 yr incumbent and just wanted someone, anyone, different.
“It is only a 10 hour drive between Boise and the SF Bay Area, and about 6 hours (440 miles) east of Portland.”
Clearly you do not live or stayed in either one of those two s**tholes.
Even four hours north of Boise we know what kind of liberal shiitehole that Boise is turning into. No mystery that all the tech imports brought their destructive voting habits with them.
