Gov. Gavin Newsom admits it: Green energy mandates are driving California's blackouts
American Thinker ^ | 08/18/2020 | Monica Showalter

As Democrats tout their green new deal at their virtual convention, an ugly picture is emerging from California as to what that looks like:

According to Deadline Hollywood:

As temperatures broke records across the state, California energy officials announced the first rolling blackouts in the state since 2001 and warned that the state was bracing for what could be the largest power outage it has ever seen, likely on Monday.

And it was pretty bad, Caracas-bad if you lived in the wrong parts. Yet this is the California that touts itself as "the model" for Democrats' climate action, and what the Democrats holding their convention this week would like to impose on the rest of the states if God forbid, Joe Biden gets elected president.

Gov. Gavin Newsom, who's in the middle of this, and probably hearing from his Silicon Valley baron allies, is finally admitting the truth about the failure of green energy to deliver actual energy when it's needed, calling on the state to 'sober up.'

According to Breitbart, which is the only news agency out there not editing these 'inconvenient truths' from their stories:

One reason the state lacked power, officials admitted, was its over-reliance on “renewables” — i.e. wind and solar power.

There was not enough wind to keep turbines going, Newsom said, and cloud cover and nightfall restricted solar power.

“While we’ve had some peak gust winds,” he explained, “wind gust events across the state have been relatively mild.”

...and...

“We failed to predict and plan these shortages,” Newsom admitted boldly, “and that’s simply unacceptable.” He said he took responsibility for the crisis, and for addressing it immediately, so that “we never come back into this position again.”

The Green New Deal, which emanated from the “brilliant” minds of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her pals, envisions a new America, one completely free of fossil fuels and nuclear power. It will run, instead, on solar, wind, and water power.

Democrats don’t care that green energy is too unreliable to run America or that these “natural” energy alternatives are damaging to the environment (e.g., dead birds, hideous wind and solar farms, and dams and water re-routing). Both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are on board with the Green New Deal. As the campaign progresses, one has to wonder how they’re going to explain away the fact that solar power has been the cause of massive energy failures across large swaths of California.

Both Biden and Harris said “yes” to the Green New Deal. If they win ( God forbid ), what you see in California will be happening all over the country.

Interesting theory, actual answer is that there was more than enough power to keep everything on, just no way to get it to the dense urban areas. California's ISO, the non-profit 'agency' that governs the interlinks that get power from generators to the cities that craves the power, should have used the vast infusion of cash it got from the silly 'power auctions' to upgrade the infrastructure to deliver power.

They didn't. Instead they decommissioned the most miles ever of high tension power lines (the super-highways of power distribution.) NIMBY activists want to keep power stations out of urban areas where power is most consumed, yet also object to the wide swaths high tension lines cut through forests.

It's kinda nice to have a scapegoat in the green machine of bird cuisinarts and solar panels that become less and less effective the moment you install them, but those are a drip in the bucket compared to the massive power plants that actually power California...if they can get the electricity there.

Enjoy CA! This is what you voted for. No recall petition? Guess they are loving it.

I recommend Flintstone re-runs to help Californians cope.

That’s the beauty of natural gas - can be found in many places, is quite cheap, is the most energy-dense source there is (except nuclear) is easily transported, has very low emissions, and has a tiny footprint.

So of course leftists hate it.

They should be happy. What could be more green than blackouts?

Go back fifty years ago and you will see the anti-nuke-anti-coal “Greenies” coming up with all sorts of hare-brained ideas on how to produce “clean” energy.
One magazine in the 1970s, ponied up with $10,000 dollars of their own money to build a “perpetual motion machine”. It didn’t work.

I remember reading in Power Engineering magazine the plans for a geo-thermal plant in New Mexico. They bought the generator, all necessary equipment, and drilled the hole.

They did not get enough steam from the ground to make it work and a year later I saw all that equipment for sale in the same magazine.

As President Trump has stated so many times in deriding The Green New Deal; what happens when there’s no wind? What happens when the skies are overcast for days and during the night? Where will your electricity come from?
Commonsense and reality have just come home to the idiots in California.
The ex-home state I had the sense to leave more than 12 years ago. I saw where they were heading and got out. We quit our jobs, sold our home. Packed up the kids and got out. Made Tampa Bay our new home.

The answer is simply. Build more dams. Then you can get power and have more water. Both of which CA needs.

The democrats have blocked any new power plants, closed existing ones, The corrupt gov Newsom wants to tear down 4 dams so less water storage. Raise the price of electricity to pay for the fat gov’t pensions.

The “PowerLoop” proposal by Keith Lofstrom MSEE in theory allows storage of a great amount of intermittent energy, and would provide a needed buffer capacity with low losses. His concept is open-source as he wishes someone to implement the system without IP hindrance.
