The whole company is just 9 years old. Their COVID-19 vaccine has passed human clinical trials for phase 1 and phase 2. They’re beginning the final phase (phase 3) right now.

If their approach works (and granted, that remains to be seen), it holds the promise of delivering much faster and cheaper vaccines. This is especially critical for Influenza, which has multiple strains - any of which can become active within human populations in any given season - each of which rapidly mutates. Traditional vaccines take months to culture and manufacture. An mRNA vaccine could have doses prepared in weeks. This could keep us ahead of Influenza and save tens of thousands of American lives each year. If it works, which is not yet a given. But the payoff makes it worth at least trying.
