I'm not so sure about that.
I kept a suite at the Sofitel at 57 & 7th during the 90s when Dinkins was mayor and the local TV news was actually rooting for NY to "achieve 2,000 murders" in a single year.
I had loads of free time in the evenings, and this was before FOX, so I watched local NY stations and they were quietly "rooting for 2,000 murders}.
Anyone old enough to have lived in and around the NY metro area during that period, and watched the news will verify what I am saying.
After NY hit the 2,000 murders in a single year, Rudy ran for mayor as a law and order guy and he was a shoe in.
The city was absolutely transformed, for the better and New Yorkers loved him for making their city safe.
It could happen, again.
I was proud to be New Yorker.
I have lived most of my life 60 miles, and a world, away from mid-town. I remember those days, too. New York was the Chicago of its day. Squeegee guys, panhandlers, et al.
I believe it’s even worse now. If it’s possible, society has become even more coarse and uncivilized.
I pray, for the sake of those who cannot / will not leave the city, that a law & order candidate emerges and wins, and that the city council undergoes a similar change.
Regardless, I hope to be far away from the whole business by then.
