The millions dead in England and America are piling up... oh wait this is not happening.
Matthew McConaughey grills Dr. Anthony Fauci
“OK, true-false: Sunlight kills the virus?” McConaughey asked.
“It does,” Fauci replied, supporting a theory pushed by President Donald Trump. “That’s the truth.”

I heard masks stop bacteria but not viruses. Any microbiologists here who can confirm this? I would assume its true as when you breathe in a virus that is only 20 nanometers long it can easily pass through the fibers, a mask is not solid.

It doesn’t take an expert to see that the problem isn’t that the fabric of an everyday mask cannot filter viruses. The masks are far from air tight. You can’t breathe thru the fabric itself, so you are inhaling and around the edges of the mask. That’s why glasses fog up.
There are only 7 coronaviruses known to infect humans. 4 of them are among the over 200 viruses known to cause mild symptoms we collectively refer to as the common cold. Nobody’s funding vaccine development for those because nobody’s going to pay for a vaccine that costs that much (to cover all the various viruses in various families involved).
The other three coronaviruses are SARS-CoV-1 (SARS 2003), MERS-CoV (MERS 2012), and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). We developed apparently working vaccine candidates for SARS 2003 and MERS 2012 that made it through phase 1 and phase 2 human trials. However, those diseases burned out quickly (they killed people too fast and spread too slow) and so without any patients left (and thus no market for a vaccine), no funding was available for the massively expensive phase 3 trials.
The final coronavirus is SARS-CoV-2, which is very similar to SARS 2003, except it spreads much better and kills much slower and less often. There’s all the funding in the world to make phase 3 trials happen. In fact, three are in progress right now in the US and several others are in phase 3 trials in other countries. Phase 3 trials test the vaccine candidate on tens of thousands of volunteers over the course of months. This after hundreds or thousands have already tested it in phase 1 and phase 2 human trials.
We’re following the same protocols for safety and efficacy testing with COVID-19 vaccines as we do for any other new drug or vaccine. If it passes phase 3 trials, rest assured we know it’s safe and that it works.
You don’t need to filter the viruses themselves because they can’t live on their own. In dry air, their proteins denature immediately and they become inactive (unable to cause infection). SARS-CoV-2 is primarily transmitted via respiratory droplets. Initial droplet sizing is ~80um. A cloth mask does just fine filtering most of that. Is it air-tight? No. Does it severely reduce both the volume of respiratory droplets released by an infected person and the distance the remaining droplets travel? Absolutely.

As you can see by my tagline, I am never assured that they are safe and don’t trust these people as far as Dr. Fauci can throw a baseball.
Completely ridiculous advice. All available evidence suggests SARS-CoV-2 does not spread well at all outdoors. CDC estimates it’s 19 times more likely to be transmitted indoors than outside and a separate study that looked at contact tracing examined several thousand cases and could only identify ONE case of outdoor transmission from all of them.
Wearing a well made, clean, properly fitting mask while indoors in public places is good advice. Wearing one outside, in the car, or while you sleep at night is ridiculous and pointless. There’s just no evidence whatsoever to support that.
Well, we don’t need every last person to take the vaccine for it to do its job. All we need is enough people to take it that we hit herd immunity. Then COVID-19 goes away and we can get back to the business of rebuilding our economy. I’m all in favor of each individual making their own personal decisions about what’s best for their own health and well-being. That includes masks and vaccines. No mandates. No thanks.
Yes! That’s another thing, it’s ridiculous because people are inhaling from the edges of the mask as well so any Coronavirus floating around there can easily be inhaled. I would really like to know the stats of the amount of people who contracted the virus who wore masks but I’m sure they media will never report it. Think about it: All the people wearing masks today yet they still claim thousands are getting this virus, well how is that possible if they are wearing masks? The masks are useless then.
On that we can wholeheartedly agree. If a vaccine is announced two minutes later Joe will be calling for it to be made mandatory.
A cloth mask does just fine filtering most of that. Is it air-tight? No. Does it severely reduce both the volume of respiratory droplets released by an infected person and the distance the remaining droplets travel? Absolutely.

If you believe that we’re fine as long as we use an everyday mask to block droplets, let me challenge to to spend some time with an ebola patient with only droplet protection.
Live free or die...even if by 1000 cuts...Brits and somewhere near 600...
Dr. Atlas seems to have a sane, reasoned approached to masks. He thinks they CAN help in certain limited circumstances. Trump needs to get him out on the stump preaching that gospel.
Slow Joe is now apparently going to wear one every waking moment he’s out of his basement. And the very LAST thing he needs is a reduction in oxygen flow to his brain.
Agree, offer him up to all the shows.
A) Why would that be a problem? Do you know how ebola spreads? (Hint: It's NOT through the air)
B) Ebola is a completely different virus from SARS-CoV-2. Not even remotely related.
C) When we talk about masks blocking droplets, we're talking about easy steps that can be taken that reduce the risk of transmission. Not to zero, but reducing it by 40 or 60% is extremely helpful and saves lives. And we don't need to shut down the economy or all dress up in full bunny suits to achieve a significant reduction in transmission. Just take a few simple precautions that don't really impact us in a significant way.
The primary purpose of the masks is to reduce the amount of viral transmission FROM infected persons. They can provide some very limited protection from getting it, but they’re mostly to prevent it from being spread.
Most COVID-19 cases are either asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms easily confused with allergies or a minor cough or cold. People who largely feel fine go out in public. If they’re infected with SARS-CoV-2, then every word spoken, every random cough (sometimes you just have a tickle in your throat) or sneeze, every strong exhalation of any kind is pouring virus-filled droplets out into the air. If you have a mask over your nose and mouth, most of those droplets are captured. The virus denatures when it’s not in a droplet, so if you stop the droplets, you stop the virus. If it can’t get past your mask, it can’t infect people.

Thanks for posting, now I understand
Agreed.
A week or so ago I played video poker at a Nevada casino. On the small screen at the top where you put in your courtesy card, there is a running micro-video about washing your hands, keeping "social distance", and, wearing a mask. Each side of the machine had a plastic shield, hemming you into a U-shaped cubicle to protect you from your neighbor.
You played the game by touching the unsanitized touch screen or the buttons below it.
