Richard Nixon bears responsibility for the pandemic’s child-care crisis

The coronavirus pandemic has drawn attention to the struggle American parents face accessing high-quality and affordable child care for children under 5. Under stay-at-home orders, the majority of child-care facilities have closed their doors — some perhaps permanently — and many centers permitted to reopen are ill-equipped to bear the additional costs of adhering to local and state guidelines. Many working parents, particularly mothers, have been forced out of work to provide care for their children in this absence. The child-care industry is not only essential to providers’ and parents’ livelihoods, but to the economy as a whole.

At the heart of the current crisis in child care is unequal access: Wealthy parents have managed to weather the storm of the coronavirus because of access to babysitters and nannies, while working parents who rely on providers outside their homes have struggled to find care during the pandemic.

When you’ve dumped all you can on the living Republicans, start dumping on the dead ones.

The Great Society/feminism is to blame for this part of the mess, not lack of universal state-funded daycare.

Nixon veoted a bill to create a nationalized day care system almost 50 years ago, and so it’s Nixon’s fault that we are seeing day care problems due to this virus?????

If it was so outrageous that Nixon vetoed such a bill, why didn’t good Democrat presidents such as Bill Clinton or Barack Obama pass that legislation, when they had Democrat majorities in Congress during their presidencies?

It has been simmering below the surface for decades and can be traced back to President Richard M. Nixon’s 1971 veto of federally funded universal child care, which created our bifurcated approach to child care that considers the needs of some and not others.

Dems have been in control of Congress and the Presidency multiple times since Nixon was President, the latest being when Obama took office. Looks like the Kenyan’s fault to me.

We have a federal government with a 5 trillion budget and 26 trillion deficit.

It ALWAYS more and more big bloated sugar daddy government.

If these single mothers can’t afford child care then maybe they shouldn’t have kids. Where are the fathers?

I know plenty of married couples who struggle with finding affordable child care.

Message from a Patriarch: GOOD!

Perhaps we should lower the tax burden to the point where a male "head of household" could afford to support a WIFE and family.

The nurturers of the species, women, would be free to love and raise children to be functional adults rather than attention-starved, spoiled, under-educated, angry nincompoops.

Flame away, feminists.

Beating a “dead horse” doesn’t even come close to describing this screed by the biased and prejudiced Washington Compost.

There you go again, Wash Compost. Jimmy Carter also had large majorities in both houses and also did nothing.

Almost 50 years ago, 20 years of 'D'emocrat Administrations, not to say years of 'D' dominated US Congresses and this veto was what created this CRISIS?! I seem to remember a big witch-trial scandal in the late 70s involving child care and molestations. Just imagine that with Federal fundings involved, would this law have stayed in place? Common conceit amongst these writers, they assume perfection where history shows anything but.

This is the author; "Anna K. Danziger Halperin is the Andrew W. Mellon postdoctoral fellow in women’s history and public history at the New-York Historical Society. She is writing a book on the history of child care, motherhood and race since the 1960s."

What a moronic perspective. Ford, Carter, Reagan Bush, Clinton, Bush Obama Trump. Any of these asshats could have done what she is suggesting.

If you can’t afford kids, don’t have em. Nixon did screw things up for the poor. Disconnecting the dollar from gold means the dollar today buys almost nothing compared to the dollar in 1970. A family could live on one income, tough to do today.

Nixon should also be blamed for the struggles of poor families today....given how many poor kids are born in single family homes. I was 8 in 1970. Back then, radically fewer kids were born out of wedlock. Today, the majority. The pro abortion folks think they have given women control over their bodies. What they have also given men the the right to abandon women when they get pregnant. Nixon should be blamed. For Ford, or Reagan or Bush or Bush or Trump. The libs get a pass from this ass
