Trump knows it’s a bunch of BS but I think he’s setting the stage for in-person voting. He has to convince the pearl clutchers that mail-in voting is not necessary.
Trump has known this was BS since the beginning, but he let the narrative get away from him.
Letting Fauci and Birx in front of the cameras was his biggest mistake and they’re still there, so that makes me wonder what’s going through his mind.
We can go to work, we can go to the grocery store, we can go to the gas station, and we can go to the polling place and vote. Set the booths six feet apart to please the snowflakes and let’s git er done.

I think you might be right. By accepting the premise that masks can be beneficial in crowded places, he can then make the argument that wearing masks in polling places is sufficient to allow in-person voting.
Overall I think he’s probably carved out the least bad position, politically, that he can take on the masks. It’s sort of a modified limited hangout so to speak.
