No one would argue that Rep. John Lewis doesnt deserve a proper memorial. He was a civil rights icon and a long-serving member of Congress who was beloved by his colleagues. In the middle of a pandemic, however, how do we decide who gets the pomp and circumstance of a traditional burial and who has to watch their loved one go six feet under via Zoom call?
Funerals are important: they acknowledge the sanctity of life and allow friends and family to come together to grieve their loss. This reality doesnt change based on how famous or revered an individual was to the general public: it doesnt hurt any less to say goodbye to someone who was just a dad or just someones child or just a dear friend. Their lives arent any less significant. Yet politicians have decided that celebrity affords them the right to override the onerous restrictions on funerals that so many average Americans have been forced to accept.
Yes, Georgia is unique in that it allows anyone to have a funeral. However, the governors executive order prohibits gatherings of more than 50 people if social distancing cannot be maintained. Photos of Lewiss funeral in Atlanta showed that many more than 50 people attended and that social distancing was not maintained in parts of the church, nor during the burial outside.
Even if social distancing is possible, the National Funeral Directors Association strongly recommends that funerals be limited to immediate family and close friends of the decedent, the Georgia Department of Public Healths funeral guidance says.
At the same time, a significant number of attendees traveled from out of state to attend the funeral. 50 members of Congress, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, attended. Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a mandatory two-week quarantine for anyone who travels to Washington

The ruling elite continues to enjoy special privileges, even after death.
Ordinary mortals pay for it all.
Politicians dont have the right to impose onerous restrictions on us at all, much less over funerals.
They need to be put back into place. They are SUPPOSED to be our representatives.
We did not appoint them to be our overlords.
The Supreme Court, whos most important role is to be the last line in the effort to preserve our God given rights, ruled that, despite:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof
it is perfectly okay for the states to prohibit the free exercise of religion.
I feel sorry and mad for all those families that could not have funerals and services for their loved ones. This is despicable.
And don’t forget, boys and girls, “we are all in this together.”
yea right
My best friend dies in GA in May. There has still not been a funeral for her. Watching the John Lewis extravaganza made me livid.
Lewis was also one of the black reps that claimed Tea Party peaceful protesters yelled racial slurs at them (back in the 2010 obummercare protests). These bogus claims were never proven but left as fact as the MSM moved on to the next shinny squirrel.
I agree DesertRhino, he was a POS
I agree. He never did a useful thing in his life other than walk next to MLK on that bridge 50 years ago. He was indeed a POS. and my rep, sad to say. That’s what i get for living in Atlanta area. No way we’ll get anyone any better, as we are vastly outnumbered.
I guess Hateful Nasty Nancy didnt throw herself on the casket as it was being lowered...too bad.
.....John Lewis certainly merited a large funeral!.....
That was because of what he did in his youth!!! What he had been doing more recently was not so good.
President Trump was right not to go to his funeral, even though the (deluded) Biden supporters will call him a racist!
Remember, it is the police who did nothing to arrest or fine these politicians and those same police will arrest you or I in a second if we broke those criminal ‘laws’ put in place by criminal politicians.
JoMa
Yes, it does. We come not to praise but to bury W.H.O.
