Some people got very creative in smuggling out their resources, if they had time. Jewelry was one route...wear high-quality gold and diamonds on your person (registered with customs) on the way out, sell them in the West and deposit the money in a Western account, and replace them with lower-quality or fakes for the return home.
If you love money more than your life, there's an excellent chance you will lose both.
At that point, you REALLY "can't take it with you".
