I have a question. When people “follow” someone and then later down the road when they’re no longer interested in that person do they simply ignore their tweets or do they manually unfollow them? Meaning, maybe the number of followers is way out of line in term of how many of them are actually paying attention to the tweeter.

Most people never make the effort to unfollow, which you can definitely do. For those that lose interest, I bet only 10% actually unfollow, the other 90% just never check for updates anymore, leaving the follower number misleading.
