Yale epidemiologist: Dr. Fauci running 'misinformation campaign' against hydroxychloroquine

Dr. Harvey Risch, a noted Yale epidemiologist, has accused White House coronavirus task force member Dr. Anthony Fauci of waging a "misinformation campaign" against the drug hydroxychloroquine, claiming the medication has shown consistently encouraging results in treating COVID-19 when used properly.

Hydroxychloroquine has been at the center of a protracted political debate since March, when President Trump cited the drug as a promising possible treatment for the novel coronavirus. HCQ has long been used by doctors to treat malaria along with other syndromes such as arthritis and lupus. The World Health Organization lists it as an essential medicine, while nearly five million Americans hold prescriptions for it.

Since Trump's speculative endorsement of the drug, media outlets and medical officials have for several months aggressively promoted various medical trials that have determined the drug has no effectiveness in fighting COVID-19; many commentators have also insisted, in spite of the drug's decades-long safe track record, that it is too dangerous to be used to cure the disease.

For many, it is viewed as a marker of political identity, on both sides of the political spectrum," he said. "Nobody needs me to remind them that this is not how medicine should proceed."

He also argues that "the drug has not been used properly in many studies," and that delays in administering the drug have reduced its effectiveness.

"In the future," Risch says in the column, "I believe this misbegotten episode regarding hydroxychloroquine will be studied by sociologists of medicine as a classic example of how extra-scientific factors overrode clear-cut medical evidence."

"But for now," he adds, "reality demands a clear, scientific eye on the evidence and where it points."

It has been used for fifty years...

Not only that, the reason it was first looked at for SARS-2 because of its use during SARS-1. Doctors first went to what they knew had been successful in the past. They just don’t flip through the PDR and pick whatever drug their finger lands on.

Interesting point made about hospitalizations.

How many hospitalizations, especially the overnight observational admissions, are just so patients can be treated with Trump pills?

That’s one way to goose admissions stats, make money for hospitals.

There is a White House petition for people who want HCQ over the counter as it already is in much of the world. I am not sure if I could post the link, but google White House petition permitting OTC of hydroxychloroquine.

Here’s a stat I want to see: how many patients hospitalized for/with WuFlu are discharged after an overnight stay.

“consistently encouraging results in treating COVID-19 when used properly”

Misleading. What HCQ advocates call “proper use” is changing constantly.

It’s gone from “lifesaving miracle for critically ill” to “well, you have to give it when survival probability is 99.97% or it doesn’t work”.

HCQ clinically has a weak antiviral effect, especially when combined with azithromycin. It’s role in clinical practice, especially in ill patients, remains undefined.

The over the top opposition, especially the emphasis on danger, is all political. It’s perfectly safe when given for five days with azithromycin per the Didier Raoult Marseilles protocol.

Dr. Fauci will go down as the biggest fraud in American history (depending on who writes said history, of course).

I am only glad that more and more people are seeing this fraud for what he is, namely, a lifelong bureaucrat who has ridden his incompetence to the top of the government cheese wheel.

John Hopkins is reporting 600,000+ deaths worldwide from WuFlu so far.

Car accidents kill far more people worldwide annually.

This is nuts.

HCQ is interesting as an anti SARS-CoV-2 agent, without a doubt. I used it a lot in March and April.

But almost anything anyone says about it now is about Donald Trump, and nothing else.

Seems to me that the evidence points to someone making a concerted effort to steer folks away from a proven affordable drug in favor of the latest much higher priced version. If they would do this, what else might they be guilty of?

This is a drug that is ALREADY commonly used for a number of things.

WHY DON’T THEY JUST SEARCH THEIR DATABASE TO SEE IF ANY OF THE PEOPLE USING IT HAVE GOTTEN COVID?
