Locals scramble to higher ground as world's largest dam faces mounting pressure

People in cities along China's Yangtze River, already swamped with water, are now scrambling to shore up embankments as the world's largest dam faces fast mounting flood pressure...

The Three Gorges Dam spans the Yangtze, Asia's longest river, which has become a raging torrent with storm water pouring into the reservoir of the dam at 60 million litres per second on Monday night.

On Tuesday morning, dam operator the China Three Gorges Group said water flow into the reservoir fluctuated between 50 million and 60 million litres per second.

And the peak flow has not eased, adding more than ten trillion litres to the mega-dam in just 10 days.

All arteries leading from the Yangtze River remain deluged by the third big flood this summer.

The China Three Gorges Group say they plan to hold as much water in the dam as possible to buy time for cities downstream to build up their defences.

According to local reports, the dam's operator has indicated there are 13 days left before the reservoir will fill to the brim.

Yep. I just looked at some pics and a leak happened about half way up off to the one side.

Then there was Mulholland's dam...

My deep concern is that the crazy bastards start a war over this.

Reason? FOOD.

With the Asian rim countries gearing up their military...

The Japanese, the Aussies, even NZ is getting into the act.

Nam, India, the Philippines, the whole works.

Thanks for the reply.

I fear that many will wish they were dead as the aftermath of this unfolds.

Oh Yes..I plumb forgot about that one.

There was one in Italy that went out also..cept it was a landslide that got that one.

There was one in Germany that went out in WW2 also with a little help from the Brits.

I sure hope it’s not hit by a 1000’ diameter asteroid or a mega shaker in the 10.7 Richter scale range. That would be terrible.

But on the bright side, now the peasants down river don’t ever have to wash their cars again (like any of them can afford a car) ok ok their musk oxen and water buffalo.

Doesn’t this dam generate power for most of central China?

#14. In others words, I say to the local Chinese residents near the dam, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat”.

“My deep concern is that the crazy bastards start a war over this. Reason? FOOD.”

If the worst case catastrophic failure of that dam were to occur, we would be “through the looking glass” into a whole different reality. It is hard to predict all the fallout.

As another poster alluded to, several times the number of people killed in WWII could potentially be wiped out.

Even if there was enough food Globally to go around, China might might be challenged to produce the money to pay for it, or the logistics to distribute it.

We have to consider the worst case reactions of the communist Party. They are unlikely to become good people overnight. If they pursued a war, it might be for internal political reasons - to distract domestic opinion, or effect intra-Party power grabs.

I tend to think that they would be less likely to start a war after taking such an earth-shattering economic set back. It would take a while to even understand what might be broken in their internal supply chain, before risking finding out the hard way - in combat.

I also think that credit would be extended to China to cover food imports by wealthy Countries and International organizations, such that everyone who could export food to them, would already be running at near full tilt to do so - so little additional food might be gained in a war.

Their internal political system would experience an unprecedented stress though (like the dam itself is now being tested). No one can say if, or how, it would break.

I checked a topo map of the area, and it looks like there are a few places where the ground itself might give way like what happened at Lake Delton.

I agree, if it doesn’t blow out, it will be a miracle.

How would a war solve their food crisis?

He kind of reminds me of Slim Pickens in Dr. Strangelove.

#33. Re the concrete used to make the Hoover Dam. Don’t know what type it was either but I do know that they used Hoover Vacuums to clean up the site. /sarc
