My guess is Politics with an election three months off. If he wins reelection Farci will be kicked to the curb in a way that only Trump can do. Ask Sessions about it.
Because President Trump is in a very weak position since the Democrats gained control of the House. He must be indirect in a great many things to be effective at all.
His "support" for Fauchi includes cutting him out of the loop on major decisions and transferring data gathering responsibilities from CDC to HHS.
Of course, I would prefer that the CDC, the DOJ, the FBI, and various Intelligence agencies be thoroughly purged by executive orders from President Trump. Fauchi should certainly get the boot.
That would take a Republican majority in the House and the Senate - and genuine support for the President from the Republican party. Well, one can always dream of a better world - and work to move things in that direction.
